off topic -- whimpering about work

I am a 12 year veteran as a child protection worker. It is a difficult job that

encompasses so much responsibility in trying to balance a child's needs to be

with their family against the risk if they remain there. I am SO unhappy with

the department I work for that I cannot even express it. On the other hand, I

NEED to keep working, and thus, right now have NO CHOICE but to keep working

there. Trust me... as soon as the opportunity avails itself, I will take it.

The following is just a bit of what I was told by my supervisor yesterday:

Don't do random home visits... you might find something we would rather not know

about. (We are SUPPOSED to do random home visits.)

" I agree with you, but I will never tell anyone that. It is a political game.

I tell this person what they want to hear... then I tell the next person what

they want to hear. I tell everyone what they want to hear... not what is true. "

I responded that I cannot change what is truth... but of course, I must adapt

how I address it depending upon the person/group, but the truth remains the

truth. My supervisor responded that in " politics " one has to say what the other

people want to hear.

When I was told that the decision on when children go home on visits or are

returned home will now be made by a community group... I asked that this be

clarified in writing as opposed to just being " told " that this is the change

--since this decision-making is traditionally a responsibility delegated to the

social worker. (Of course, it is backed up through the courts, but trust me...

it is the evaluation of the social worker that the judge primarily relies on.)

My supervisor refused to put anything in writing. (And yet, I know right now

that a social worker in Indiana is going to prison because of their decision

making which is interpreted as resulting in the death of a child upon their

return home.)

Anyway... there was a lot more... but that is my frustration today.

============================

The system sucks and puts the social worker between a rock and a

hard place. Between now and the time you can put yourself into a

better job situation...please remember that you ARE making a

difference. Even if its just a smile or kind word that gives a kid

something to hold on to. Even if it's just one kid amoungst

thousands....you are making a difference.

Hugs

Jo

digging out my voodoo doll because there is a supervisor who needs a

little....lets say, adjustment.
