Hyperlexia isn't a horrible thing to be added. Think of it as a positive that

reading will not be a problem. My son has hydrocephalus. a condition that will

never change. He also had been multi-diagnosed...autism, PDD-NOS, apraxic and

hyperlexic. Many doctors said he would never sit up on time and never hit any

milestones on time. He started talking at 3 1/2. He is now 10 and mainsteamed

in a 5th grade class. He is not autistic, not apraxic, not hyperlexic. He has

delays and is on a 5th grade level with some things and a 3rd grade level on

others. Socially he is still way behind, but getting better every year. I

guess what I'm trying to say is do the best with your grandson. Don't get stuck

with the diagnosis. My son's hyperlexia evened out. He was reading like crazy

in Kindergarten. It's what he was good at and he knew it. Doctors don't know

all, many times they make an educated guess. Sometimes even educated guesses

are wrong. My son learned through videos. Many people would say this is not the

way to go, but it worked for us. Get him into a good school with support.

Speech, O/t and P/t if needed in school and out of school if your insurance

permits. You know him best.

All my best

O/K folks 2 therapist have just added hyperlexic to 7 year old grandson's

diagnoses of autism & apraxia. He also has a twin brother affected by autism. I

am just starting my research into hyperlexic. I have NEVER heard this word until

yesterday.

Does anyone out there have insights to share? He was DX with autism at 2 then

came the apraxia DX at 6. The apraxia DX was hard for us to get as we battled

with the school district to pay for an eval, but we knew it was apraxia. Now

hyperlexic. Will things keep being added to his DX forever? How do we best teach

him?

His brother is not affected by apraxia.

Help!
