Guest guest
Nadine - welcome to the group. So sorry you have been through so much and have to be here. I think Jan and others with experience and/or issues of nodules and thyriodectomies and other surgery should be the ones to comment about your concerns about medication. I have Hashimoto's and so far, I don't have any nodules issues. If you have recent blood work results you could post, that would help. In particular, we look at and discuss results of the following tests, which we've found that the better docs order for us. There may be other tests I've left out which others may comment on. - CBC - CMP - Lipid panel - TSH, Free T4, Free T3, antibodies (Anti TG Ab, Anti TPO Ab) - Iron panel: ferritin, total/serum iron, total iron binding capacity, percent iron saturation - female hormones (estradiol, estrone, progesterone, FSH, total testosterone) - Cortisol (a.m.) - DHEA SO4 - Vit B12, Mg - Folic acid - Homocystine Also, if you have older blood test results that include any of the tests listed, that would be informative. Did you have any symptoms of hypothyroidism prior to the accident? Sara > > Good Evening, > I'm Nadine, 52 and have a home in Austin, TX but right now am living/working in Kuwait with my husband. I was in an auto accident mid January 07 and at that time an MRI showed a couple of nodules on my Thyroid. Had too many other injuries needing attention, so placed my thyroid concerns on the back burner for a few months. I went to an ENT dr and told him my concerns. He said not to worry since it was multi nodular, it wouldn't be cancer unless it was only one. We dismissed him as an absolute Quack and sought another opinion. > > I had a FNA done and it came back that the tissues were benign but the noduals kept growing and by December I had problems choking and swallowing. I also had a sonogram done that showed the isthmus pretty much just one large nodule. (Meanwhile my thyroid hormone levels were considered normal). > > I had a Total Thyroidectomy done here Dec. 3, 07 and am still home (in Kuwait) on medical leave because the nodules had surrounded my voice box (which the surgeon said was unusually small). The Dr scraped the sticky nodule tentacles off the voice box and left it too traumatized for me to breath (voice box has to open and close for air). The surgery that should have lasted about 90 min took 6 hours. > I was placed on a ventilator for a couple of days and then had what is to be a temporary Treackeostomy - so right now I'm a " neckbreather " too (does not help the depression) When I block the treak with a finger, I can speak and am starting to feel better. They believe the treak may come out in early March. I cannot go back to work in the desert with a treak because of the dust. I am on 125mcg of Levothroxine Sodium a day. My parathyroids seem to be fine. I cannot get Amour here because all pork products are banned. Am wondering though if Thylor would be a better choice. We are 8 hours ahead of TX so my answers and responses may take a while, but am looking forward to learning more from the group. Thank you, Nadine >
Guest guest
Hi Nadine, welcome to the group. Looks like you are going through alot right now. Guest guest
Hi Nadine, Greetings from Egypt! I'm another Texan in the Middle East. I'm not active in the group but I do read the posts from time to time. I have a preschooler at home and don't have as much time for things as I used to. I don't have any experience with your situation but I know how hard it must be for you to be going through this in another country. I'm hypothyroid and since seeing Dr. 3 years ago, I have been feeling better (still have a few problems but much better than I was). I get him to write me a 6 month Rx for Armour and I take that with me (I'm in Dallas for a couple of months every summer). I have either gone home at Christmas or had a friend bring me the next 6 month supply. I've been told that Women's International Pharmacy can ship anywhere in the world but the tariff/customs here are kind of funky so I haven't tried it yet. We only have one brand of Thyroid hormone here (synthetic T4) but Kuwait has much more available so if you have Thyrolar it might be worth a try if you're not feeling well. Do you have a doctor you like there? Devon > > Good Evening, > I'm Nadine, 52 and have a home in Austin, TX but right now am living/working in Kuwait with my husband. Guest guest
Hi Devon, Well how cool is that! Where do you live in Egypt? Last October we visited Luxor and Ciro for a week with some friends and had such a great time. I have a surgeon that I like a lot, he did a good job but not sure if he is the one that should be prescrbing the thyroid replacements. He seems to believe Eltroxin (synthetic T4) is the only way to go. He dropped me from 150mcg to 125mcg because he thought the T4 a bit high, but I seem so tired all the time right now. I'm also just starting on Wellbutrine and that could have made me tired too-don't know. At 52 you don't know who/what to blame...."mental pause", being thyroidless, or what?! I have a general Dr that usually will prescribe me almost anything I tell her I need (which to me is quite odd) so I may be able to have her prescribe Thyrolar and see how that works for me. We go to the states (Austin) once a year so will definately try to get in to a great tyroid dr and get some Amour. Was great to hear from you. Thank you so much for writing!
