Guest guest
Natural Selection is a beautiful thing. Sometimes you have to let the herd thin itself. I personally wouldn't say anything, I used to hate when people would give their 2 cents and I wasn't asking <lol>. Let the mullets be, they are a wild breed that will react strangely when confronted with sound advice. just my 2 cents, and yes you asked LOL. Guest guest
I saw that at the gym too, EXACT same maneuver (do these guys belong to a club or something?) and here's what I did... kinda funny now that I'm writing it out. I rushed over to the guy and said, " Omigosh are you OKAY?!?!? " even though he hadn't made any sort of wounded animal noise. He looked at me a little funny and before he could say are you nuts lady, I said " Because my boyfriend tore his rotator cuff doing that EXACT SAME THING and he was out of the gym for like 8 weeks recovering and he almost died from lack of gym time so I was just making sure you are okay cuz I'd hate to see that happen to anyone else. " Literally a run-on sentence like that. Then before he could catch his breath, I pretty much just skipped off saying something about my next set and have a nice day and be careful. Then at least I had my say without it coming across like he was an idiot, and I pretty much left the scene before he could tell me that he thought *I* was an idiot. What he did from there is his biz. *shrug* Jen B. > OK, I was at the gym friday and I saw a couple guys doing some really STUPID > stuff. Guest guest
This is a BAD thing to say, but if they injure themselves, then there will just be fewer people in the gym, and easier for you to use the equipment that you want. Is there anyone supervising this gym? Someone that walks around making sure people don't hurt themselves? Andy > Natural Selection is a beautiful thing. Guest guest
I spoke up once. This guy asked to work in with me on the angled leg press. He kept locking his knees at the top of the movement. So I asked if he wanted a tip on doing the exercise. He said yes. I told him how he's locking out and how that can stress the joint. So he thanked me. If he would have said no, that he didn't want the tip, then I wouldn't have offered one. Must say, I do like to observe people's form. A lot of time I see people doing it wrong. I think about how I would correct their movement. Sometimes I see people using an unusual technique, and I want to ask why or what they're working. Two examples come to mind. One: I saw a guy doing crunches on a Swiss ball, with little pulses in a small range of movement really fast - at first it looked like he was bouncing. I see other people doing these really fast pulses for crunches without the Swiss ball and wonder why. Does anyone know what the benefit is? Two. Shoulder presses. I see lots of guys twisting the dumbbells around as they press up and down. What is that for? Jeff

Most of the time people tell me that it's the way someone else showed them how to do it and they don't really know why. Once in a while I'll get someone who will explain why they are using a particular technique and it actually makes sense. > Two examples come to mind. I have no idea why someone would do that move, unless they are trying to hit an isometric range where the muscle is under constant tension. (???) I'd be interested to hear other's opinions on this. It sounds like a useless exercise to me, but I could be wrong. I always have heard/read that slow, conctrated contractions are what's best for ab exercises. > Two. Shoulder presses. I see lots of guys twisting the dumbbells > around as they press up and down. What is that for? That's an Arnold Press, named for (of course) Arnold Schwarzenegger who invented the move. It hits the anterior and posterior deltoid heads along with the medial head, making it a more well-rounded shoulder exercise. Straight shoulder press works the medial head mostly, with minor involvement of the anterior head. Brett, correct me if I got that wrong, somehow I think I missed something in that explanation. Can't type today... that should read " slow, CONCENTRATED contractions " and I really *meant* slow, focused contractions, that makes more sense. Jen B. Guest guest
What about when you do the " bicycle pedal " crunches? I find when I do them slowly it kills my lower back, but when I do them quickly I feel it in the abs. Jeff Slow, focused contractions ARE best for abdominals. Guest guest
The answer is NEVER! unless you're asked. Doesn't seem right but that is gym ediquette (sp) > OK, I was at the gym friday and I saw a couple guys doing some really STUPID > stuff.
