Rather than rely on my memory, I pulled out one of the zillions of medical journal articles that I copied. Although the article describes results for 40 patients, the noted references are from four other papers by different surgeons. Anyway, here it is, with authors: Drs. Christen Ren, Emma , & Michel Gagner at Division of Laparoscopic Surgery, Department of Surgery The Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York " Early Results of Laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch for Morbid Obesity: A Case Series of 40 Consecutive Patients " " Biliopancreatic divirsion with duodenal switch has been shown to have the best resuls of any bariatric procedure, in terms of magnitude and duration of weight loss. However, BPD-DS along with other open bariatric procedures, carry up to a 25% rate of incisional hernia. " Hope this helps. I was hoping that I wouldn't be in that percentile. However, while visiting my PCP last week, I found that I have 2 ventral hernias. Yikes! I haven't told Dr. K yet. Anyway, ya' got to keep a sense of humor about it. I have named them Rosco and Agnes. (BTW, they don't hurt at all - I don't know why.) Melinda in NM

If they hurt especially if they make you feel sick and sweaty, then they need to be fixed ASAP. Marta

I had one! And I can probably tell you the moment it happened. I was only a few weeks out from surgery, had just finished walking on my treadmill, and reached down to lift the treadmill bed up out of the way. As I lifted it (even though it was only about 7 pounds or so) I felt something " pop " in my abdomen. I stood up straight very quickly and felt around. There was nothing wrong with my incision and I didn't feel a lump or anything. But, a month or so later, a tiny little lump started rearing it's ugly head. (I could be wrong on the exact timing here, it was three years ago.) I knew what it was right away and my husband (who'd had a hernia at one time) felt and confirmed it. So, mine was definitely due to lifting I shouldn't have been doing but some people get them even if they do everything right. It's just one of the possible and fairly common complications of major abdominal surgery. Tracey
