Guest guest
I am looking for some kind of support/brace for my mother. She is slowly recovering from her stroke, but is consistently put back by falls while in the bathroom. Yes, assistance is available, but she is evil and will not use it. Last night, she was back in the ER again because she fell in the bathroom. Although she cannot tell me (because she can't speak)... I know when she falls. She only has the use of her left arm... and when she attempts to wipe her bottom.... or pull her pants up... she gets off balance... and down she goes. I have been trying to figure out how to keep her upright. There are safety bars available... but she cannot use them because her " good " arm is occupied! Does anyone know of any kind of brace or support which would help her? I was wondering about some kind of harness that hung from the ceiling and she slipped on around her before attempting to wipe the bottom or pull her pants up. The goal would be that if she started to tip off balance... that it would keep her stable until she could regain her balance. Any ideas? Thanks! Guest guest
Elle... just a couple of thoughts about your mom's situation... does she have " am rests " on the toilet. It is a flat frame that sits on the toilet, and has arms that are like upsidedown u's. The frame is attached under the toilet seat. There is enough room to lean to reach to wipe, and still perhaps hook her bad arm over the arm. Next.... there are pant leg grabbers that you use while sitting to pull ones pants up. Similar to the grabbers some of us used post-op DS. Sounds like she needs a work up by an Occupational or Physical Therapist for ADL--- activities of daily living. My heart goes out to you being so far away from her. Thanks for sharing your incredible job frustrations... sorry to say such idiots are all over. Elle ___________________________________________________- Elle, Can't she get a good sturdy walker in and lean on it? I don't know of anything like what your describing, and I've dealt with Home health for years. I think the biggest worry in this case would be getting off balance and falling and strangling herself with the harness meant to protect her. Aside from a gait belt that would need another person to help hold, I have no clue....Possibly you could rig up some kind of latch to attach a gait belt to? Did they not deal with this in rehab? Maybe also there is a Physical therapy person in a local hospital who could help give an idea? I'd try the one she was in post op and call and ask. Surely someone could give you some good advice. in Bama Web site- http://hometown.aol.com/mdl1031/

Elle __________________________________________________________________-- Elle, Check out the locking rail for support. Is this an idea of what your looking for? It says it moves freely and locks in case of loss of balance. http://www.rehabmart.com/bathroom3.asp in Bama Web site- http://hometown.aol.com/mdl1031/
