I got Tom's attention and asked what they were doing.... he looked out and told me they were eating the ripe figs off the fig tree(not bush...Too big) Idiots dogs didn't know they were supposed to not like figs. who was feeding a sliced grape to Jean(stephen's iguanna) Ps...What the heck is a pluot? i saw them at food world but didn't know what they were. Guest guest
Pluots are a newly developed fruit, a hybrid plum/apricot. They have several different varieties and the ones we have tried so far are WONDERFUL! The first we had were at Rays daughters wedding (her husband works at a packing plant) and they were very large and fleshy and dappled pink (these were called " dappled dandies " ) but the flesh was clear like a plum and they tasted like a sweet golden red plum, very sweet, a bit of a tang, with a mild apricot flavor. There are several different varieties and the ones we had the other day were more reddish purple, smaller, but also a clear, sweet flesh, tangy and very much like a plum, but still with that bit of apricot tang. We have become addicted to them and even here where they were developed and grown just miles away they are hard to find except at farmers markets, roadside fruitstands, and independant markets. We are headed to the local farmers Market Thursday just to find more of them! Pluots are well worth trying! If you get the chance grab one! The good thing about them growing just miles from us is when we do find them, they are not refrigerated, and we can get them fresh off the trees! Guest guest
We found the Pluots here for 69 cents a pound the other day, and grapes at 79 cents a pound! I brought home a half a grocery bag full of purple plums for $3 today and watermelons are only $1.99 each! The one good thing about living here is that fruit is so darn cheap, especially if we go to a roadside stand! We can buy flats of strawberries for $7 and peaches and nectarines are so cheap they are almost giving them away (lots of friends ARE from their backyard trees) I wish we could mail them to you! LOL, but I think they might get a little soggy and soft by the time they got to ya! You need to come back out here during the picking season sometime and just cruise the ag areas and hit the local fruitstands and munch fruit til you are so sick of it you won't crave it for a year at least! I hate the heat here and the air quality, and the water that smells like rotten eggs, but I have to admit, the local fruits and vegetables make it all worthwhile occasionally! We have fresh tomato fields as well as orchard after orchard of every fruit you can imagine from plums to peaches and nectarines, apricots, and even those pesky pomegranets (they GIVE those things away by the bag around here!) all within 3 or 4 miles of home. There are walk up stands where you can grab a flat or a bag and slip your money into a little box with a slot, and there are larger fruit stand with dozens of types of fruits and veggies....you would love it!!! LOL, I brought home a dozen large pluots from the wedding thinking thsat only Ray and I would like them, the kids wiped them out in 10 minutes! That half a grocery bag of plums we got at 6 this evening? Gone by 11pm! Thank God they are so cheap, my kids eat them non-stop til they are gone! Try a Pluot! I hope they are as soft and ripe out there as they are here! (I am always afraid to try store bought fruit because it just isn't the same as fresh picked!) Bt if they are as good as the ones we tried, and you like plums, you will love them! OK, I am finishing the last of MY plums and heading to bed! Night all!! > In a message dated 8/21/2004 1:20:59 AM Central Standard Time, > firecoupleinca@y... writes: > Pluots are well worth trying! If you get the chance grab one! Guest guest
Hi Cindee! What the heck is a pluot? I'm always up for trying a new fruit! Sigh...you lucky gal! You got smaller than you actually wanted to be. Oh well, I'm just gonna have to get to a size 10/12 the hard way. Hugs!
