Hi ,

I was wondering if this is a new occurrence of if he has had the problems for

all along?

> My friend's 23 month old has left sided polymicrogyria. She is not on any

meds and has had problems with recurrent infections, mouth ulcers, poor healing.

A work-up has been started and she has a very low neutrophil count of 3% (total

wbc 4700). She is also mildly anemic. The pediatrician just called and told

her to isolate the child. Has anyone had this problem or aware of any links

between polymicrogyria and neutropenia/anemia. Thanks so much, Beck

Hi there. My daughter has left sided pmg and a poor immune system. She has low

white cells, low tcells, and low neutrophils. She also has abnormal lymphocytes.

We are very diligent with germs.

I've never heard of a high correlation of pmg/weak immune systems but I do know

that my daughters pmg was caused by 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and 22q can cause

severely impaired immune systems. Has your friends child seen an immunologist?

Have they had their t cells (cd4 count) tested? Blood disorders can also be

common with 22q.

Thanks so much, Tara--I will pass this on. I did run across the 22q11.2 in my

initial attempts to look into this. I appreciate your help, PS--Is your

daughter having any difficulties with serious infections or it is milder issues

like my friend is dealing with (mouth ulcers, frequent ear infections, poor

healing, etc)

I have been researching this further regarding a correlation between PMG

and neutropenia/anemia, and other health care issues. It appears that

there IS correlation with these issues and many others IN THE CASE OF

CMV related PMG. These infants can be born quite ill and continue to

have problems after birth.

What is not yet clear to me, is how long this can continue with these

cases. I am hoping to hear back from Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr.

Gail at Texas Children's Hospital. She specializes in Congenital CMV

related issues.

I will keep you posted!
