Effective Shadowing Techniques in the School, Home,

and Work Settings (One Day Workshop)

Sponsored by:

TAP-VA (www.autismva.org)

ASA-NV (www. asanv.org)

Loudoun County Public Schools (www.loudoun.k12.va.us)

Featuring:

Noel Woolard, M. Ed., TAP-VA Program Director

Jill Aldrich, B.S. TAP-VA Educator-Consultant

What is a shadow? A shadow is an individual who assists a person with autism

to become as independent as possible while in a least intrusive environment

(classroom, work, or community). This person is expected to be a teacher,

master prompter, creative motivator, and data analyzer. Most often, these

individuals are given the greatest amount of responsibility with the least

amount of

training and support.

During this one-day workshop, members of the TAP-VA team will present

effective shadowing techniques. Specific targets relating to social initiations

and

interactions, modifying academic curriculum, and teaching and maintaining

independent work behavior will be presented. Behavioral techniques such as

shaping, reinforcement, and prompting will be presented and practical

implications

will be discussed. Finally, emphasis will be placed on collaboration between

paraprofessionals, teachers, community workers, and family members who work and

live with those with autism.
