Guest guest
My oldest son has no memory of life " before " since he was 18 months old when was born. The oldest boy literally HATES having to deal with doctor appointments, and is glad that he's old enough to stay home for most of them now (hurray for cheap cellular phones!). He really hates having to get flu shots " just because of " every year. But the boys are best buddies, no one dare " mess with my brother " mentality. And it never ceases to amaze me when I see things like the 13 year old gently rubbing his 12 year old brother's back or head on one of the " not so good " days when he is feeling bad and falls asleep on the sofa. It was that way at our house even when they were little - a little red headed toddler patting his brother saying ' is ok y'. I believe that if the 13 year old didn't have a really good understanding of what his brother is putting up with, he would have a tendency to be a little jealous. But the 13 year old has had more than his fill of doctors too, so its more compassion than competition that we see at our house. Guess I'm really lucky. ---------------------- conatser@... Guest guest
Joanna: Great story! I hope things improve with and I'm glad you have a doctor who is willing to treat him aggressively to try to keep him off daily meds. I truely hope this works out for you. We managed it for for almost 3 years before things got to the point that he had to have daily meds. --mom to , dysgammaglobulinemia, ALL--in remission; , possible selective subclass def. Guest guest
: Can your pediatrican write a note to the school nurse or administrator letting them know about this constant fever? has great support from school--he's only in 1st grade, though--and the teachers and staff know about his history and game plan. His brother was in pre-k at the school while was still on chemo. I would try to set up a meeting to talk with the administator, nurse--if there is one--and some, if not all, of his teachers. Good luck with this. -- dysgammaglobulinemia, luekemia-in remmission Sibs >From: conatser@... > >My 13 year old has no memory of life " before " >who is 12. Guest guest
Dear , As a teacher and a mom of a CVID child, I understand the school frustration thing. When was in elementary school, we did not have any problems with getting teachers to understand the situation. Sometimes the school nurse wasn't right on top of it, but a conversation with the principal helped to settle that. Our real problems started when began middle school. I could not get a single teacher or the principal to understand 's medical condition and when it was okay to allow him to stay at school and when they needed to call me. Even notes from doctors didn't help that much. I had numerous conferences with the teachers, principal, vice principal, nurse, secretaries, etc. It was a very frustrating time. Finally, I took out of school and had a home teacher come to our house. The frustration with the school system, of course, was not the only reason I chose to take him out of school. He was also becoming quite ill much more often. I also am not recommending that approach to anyone, but for us it worked well. We just made sure that he kept in touch with his friends and kept active socially (as much as was possible healthwise). Hope this helps. Keep me posted on how the school situation goes.
