"instead of iodine"? Most of us do not take any iodine.

One supplement generally does not substitute for another.

Quite a few of us take iron, because our blood work has shown our ferritin or other iron levels to be low. Various forms of anemia are common with hypothyroidism, the reason being that low body temps do not allow iron to be properly assimilated.

I would advise all to be careful about selenium supplementation, because I went toxic on it some years ago. I took the recommended 200 mcg tablet, but failed to count what was in my multivitamin, multimineral and one other supplement as well as my daily consumption of nuts.

I mainly just felt sluggish despite good thyroid levels, but I also had a sense of being poisoned. I did a Google search on selenium overdose and found it right away. I read the labels on my supplements and found that I was taking 400 mcg without even counting what was in my food. I quit taking the extra selenium and alternated days taking the other supplements.

It took about a week to feel better.

Since that experience, I am a little wary of supplements.
