Guest guest
Do you mean “relapsing?” I’m not sure. Is there anyone on this list who has relapsed after a year or more? My doctor hems and haws about it at first, but he has stated that if I remain virus free for 6 months after treatment, I can consider it a cure. I have seen other reports to this effect as well. Guest guest
Relapsing means that after being clear of cirus it comes back,, most ppl relapse after treatment in the first 6 months post tx.. But 'some' docs are calling SVR a cure but its NOT.. Even those who remain SVR for years have hep c still in their body, it hides in scar tissue, in other organs,, its just that our immune systems have been able to keep it from unleashing itself again.. They've found it in autopsies of ppl who have supposedly been svr for years....So,, its that our bodies keep it at bay but its not gone completely.. I've read that they think it cannot replicate if you have less than 50 iu/ml.. once I read it at 650 iu/ml but the last time it was 50iu/ml... the Lowest test they do now is the heptimax that tests down to 2-5 iu/ml... I've been negative with this test since before I finished tx,, but I would never fool myself into believing that Im cured.. As I said, I know a gal who was SVR for 10 years,,, who tested negative every year who relapsed after 10 YEARS because she went on an alcohol bender for 3 or 4 months,,, it was the same genotype etc,, she retreated and has now ben SVR AGAIN for nearly 2 or 3 years... Does that sound like she was cured??? NOPE.... We can do many things to help keep our immune system healthy enough to keep any virus left from reproducing,, but we can also do things to cause it to reproduce too... There is NO cure....I hate saying that,, but it IS the truth! Matchinsky wrote: Do you mean “relapsing?” I’m not sure. Is there anyone on this list who has relapsed after a year or more? Guest guest
Yes, indeed, and actually you can count yourself darn lucky after 6 months, and then it is best to continue to take really good care of yourself. Even certain meds can cause a relapse, as of course can alcohol.. I would never fully trust even the best doctor, they may mean well, but tend to be way too busy, keep doing your own research.. Guest guest
Lee honey,, I hope it IS a cure for you and for all of us.. Im not gonna argue with you on this,,, I hope you're right... I've been SVR for 5 years and I hope I never relapse.. I guess if you're in that 1-3% who do relapse, it has to be almost harder to take than the original diagnosis.. but, just for the record, I know this gal who relapsed after 10 years and alcohol was the ONLY risk factor she had.. she did not use IV drugs, nor snort any drugs, not expose herself to anyone else's blood, nor did she receive blood or have risky sex etc,, she just relapsed... I hope she is just one of the anomoly's out there,, jaxHere's to your SVR for ever hon... Im so happy that you're there!!!Lee wrote: I had to post on this. I know Jackie doesn't agree (We've debated this one before), but I consider myself cured and so does my doctor. First, that article is way outdated. It refers to pegyalated interferon as new. Most studies that I have seen show a relapse rate of 1-3% post SVR, which is pretty good, and then you have to factor in that some of this relapse group is actually reinfection from IV drug use. I'll never find it, but I read a study last year, where they got suspicious when some of the relapsers relapsed with a different genotype. As far as finding trace HVC in autopsies. Just because it is there doen't mean that it is active. If you look hard enough you could find traces of measles and other viruses that people have had throughout their lives When Jackie's freind went on her binge, who know's what else she could have done to get reinfected. Also, of the very few people who do actually relapse I would like to know what stage of liver damage that they had prior to treatment. If they had a lot of scarring, I could see how the virus could hide in a part of the liver that may have been isolated. I was stage 1, grade 1 before treatment and have reached SVR so I consider it a cure. LEE > Matchinsky wrote: > Do you mean "relapsing?" I'm not sure.
