Why does Potassium Iodide work?

Dear Group,As most of you know I have a form of EN that is mild by comparison to most and only affects my left leg with one or 2 nodules at a time.I call what I have EN Migrans, but it has also been called Subacute Nodular Migratory Panniculitis (Vilanova Disease) This Article goes into the meds that are used for EN Migarans or Subacute Nodular Migratory Panniculitis. Among the meds described is Potassium Iodide or SSKI.Most articles say they are unsure of why SSKI works, but here we have a clear explanation:Potassium iodide (SSKI, Pima) -- Most commonly

used therapy for this condition. Works via potassium concentration in

granulomas, which releases heparin and inhibits delayed-type

hypersensitivity response. Response should be seen in all patients in

2-3 wk.It is also interesting to note that the article also cautions use of meds in general:Patients should be informed that the risks of

treatment of this condition might outweigh the benefits. The decision

to treat should be on an individual basis.Caution in patients sensitive to iodides;

prolonged use may result in hypothyroidism; caution in renal failure

and GI obstruction.Since my own EN usually subsides within 2 weeks, I have never felt the necessity of using SSKI myself, but it may be very useful to others.Love,
