Guest guest
Hi, I have a six yr old daughter, NT. I have a 3 yr old autistic daughter. I also have a 7 month old daughter, so far NT. I think many choose to refrain from future pregancies because there is a greater chance of having additional autistic children and children with autism need more individualized attention. However, I got pregnant with Dinah 6 months after Allie's diagnosis. We prayed for a long time that God's will would be done with our fertility. We came to the realization in our family that every person is worthy and a gift, regardless of what individual challenges we possess. And we wanted to have more than one sibling. It also seems to be a very good thing for Allie to have the extra people around her. Guest guest
Another reason that some choose not to have any more children (like me, for example) is that having a severely autistic child is like having about 5 children (at least is seems that way to me!), and the autistic child needs so much attention and all that therapy, supplements, etc. can be very hard on the finances. I was reading an article not too long ago which talked about how many parents of first-born autistic children don't have any more, and there is an official word for it and everything. It is called " stoppage " . > Hi, I have a six yr old daughter, NT. I have a 3 yr old autistic > daughter. I also have a 7 month old daughter, so far NT. Guest guest
Yes i am glad my hannah is a middle child.......even though her older sister doesn;t pay as much attention to her now, her younger brother does......they both went and hoped in the bathtub together last night, which is something they haven;t done for a long time, as Hannah prefers showers now..... [becoming a big girl......heehe], and they had a ball, so Adam does do her the world of good, as she really doesn;t have any friends at school, she just cannot relate to them. cheryl S -- Re: First-born girl (autistic) and siblings? Guest guest
, my husband & I have similar feelings. It took me awhile to decide if I wanted to have children. When I got the bug I decided I only wanted to have one, but ended up w/twins. lol After I had my girls I started feeling like I wanted another child, but when Sky was diagnosed I decided against it. I have a hard time juggling everything & making sure Rain gets the attention she needs also. I can see her going out of her way to get my attention already. I've often wondered how some of you moms who have more than 2 children do it especially when you have 1 or more who has special needs. Wendie > > > Hi, I have a six yr old daughter, NT. Guest guest
I think the decision is easier when you have a healthy child already. I would think if Allie had been my first it would be more difficult to expect future children to be healthy. As far as " how we do it " I haven't a clue, either, lol. I read a spam that said your first child you never leave alone, your second you are okay with reputable child care and you hide regularly from you kids with 3. It might sound like a joke, but it's true!!! Debi > , my husband & I have similar feelings. It took me awhile to > decide if I wanted to have children. Guest guest
Hello, I have 5 children (ages 15yrs - 2yrs old). I can understand your fears. I had the same fears while I was expecting my last child. My daughter is 5yrs old. We have a 2yr 2mo son who is fine, he doesn't exhibit any qualities on the autistic spectrum. I have our early childhood specialist come out so often and evaluate him. I was constantly worried about this when I first found out that I was expecting. It also seems that your immediate siblings are concerned about passing this trait onto their children if they are expecting. First-born girl (autistic) and siblings? Hello. Guest guest
Rhonda, Sky is the youngest by 1 minute & has ASD. I haven't heard of the second twin out theory. I'll have to look into that. I've only ran across a handful of parents w/twins that just one is on the spectrum so I guess I haven't given it much thought. We never saw a regression in Sky & both girls never had any kind of reaction to their vaccines. Both girls have been on antibiotics just a few times so we just believe it was there from the beginning or due to her being premature. Wendie > Your youngest twin is autistic? Guest guest
When I see and Allie together I always think of the song " Wind Beneath My Wings " . The year we were in early intervention was so hard on . To her (who was 4 at the time) it was as if Allie go to play all the time with teachers while pretty much had to sit and do nothing. She always felt as if Allie is the star. Allie's therapists always said that Allie's improvements are largely due to loving her so much and working with her just like a therapist. I have a pic from Allie's second birthday (2 weeks after her dx) and we got her a multi-step toy. The pic is of doing a hand-over-hand to teach Allie how to manipulate each part.
