During the day at work I use Viactiv, they taste like candy. My calcium was .1 below the normal range, but I am not worried. My intact parathyroid hormone is still pending since I only did the rest of my labs yesterday. It it is elevated I will worry about it later. Guest guest
Jo, could you check it out and confirm my > impression, please? > > Marta Lol...Like I'm a doctor or research scientist? Hell I can't even spell!! Ok I checked it out and found it really good info. http://www.calciuminfo.com/prof/3_4.htm I still waffle on the Citrate vs. Carbonate issue. At the site it stated something on the line of.... In most normal healthy people the body absorbs both equally. The problem is we are no longer Plumbed like normal healthy people. One of the reasons that you hear so much about Citrate being better started With the RNYers...for one reason they no longer have a " stomach " but rather a pouch with very limited stomach acids...therefore it is almost a given that the Citrate is a better form of calcium for them. But I have also read articles that state that for the most part Calcium is primarly absorbed in the duodenum. Well the RNYers do not have the duodenal portion of the small intestines available for absorption and we have only a portion. I have read that Calcium Citrate is better absorbed than Carbonate in the lower small intestines...another reason that RNYers should use citrate and one that could benefit us. I personally us Citrate as my primary source of Calcium. I also eat a ton cottage cheese and cheese, milk sometimes. Then for fun I sometimes throw in a tums or viactiv or Trader Joes Calcium chews. Hey somewhere in there I've got to be taking something at the right time that got absorbed! The main reason my primary source of Calcuim is Citrate is because it fits best with the way I take my suppliments, which is between meals. Add to that the whole Duodenum/absorption thing. Plus...Most Articles will either say that Carbonate and Citrate are absorbed equally...OR...they will say that Citrate is absorbed better....So I figure I can't go wrong with the Citrate.... If you prefer to take calcium with food, hate to swallow pills or If a person suffers from Bloating/gas then Carbonate may be the better all around choice. But bottom line the MOST IMPORTANT thing is to TAKE calcium....EVERYDAY....In DIVIDED doses...and NOT with Iron. Jo
