3/29 in Portland, OR. You can also get additional information and an official

intervention have been amazing!

Social Skills Conference

For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

March 28 & 29, 2003

Gutstein, Ph.D.

Relationship Development Intervention (RDI)

" Is it reasonable to hope that people with Autism can experience the same

yearning for emotional relationships that most of us take for granted? " 1

" The social world of children with Autism too often becomes an overly

scripted, or chaotically mystifying setting. Relationships do not become the

center of safety, excitement and novelty. Rather, social encounters are a major

source of stress and confusion. It is no wonder that most children and adults

with Autism have little motivation to become more proficient in their social

worlds. " 1

a.. Dr. Gutstein and his colleagues have created an assessment tool and

curriculum designed to help individuals learn the joy of achieving higher levels

of social competence.

b.. The program covers all stages of relationship development, from

adult-infant relationships to adult-adult loving relationships.

c.. RDI is a thorough, methodical approach to rekindling and enhancing an

individual’s ability to create meaningful, lasting relationships at any stage of

development.

d.. Individuals can use RDI exclusively or as a supplement to other highly,

effective teaching models (e.g., ABA, verbal behavior, PECS, structured

teaching, social stories, floor time).

e.. RDI programs have been successfully implemented in homes, schools, and

community settings.
