Good conversation with friends involving lots of laughter may make the difference between a not so good day and a great day. Look for ways to keep laughter in your life and you will find your general mood lifted and your pain levels lowered. When you are sufferring from a high pain day find a funny movie or sit-com rerun to watch. If you are like me it will relieve much of the anxiety and tension you might be experiencing and thus improve your overall ability to handle pain and lift you out of the depression that usually affects those experiencing chronic intractable pain. Guest guest Posted June 12, 2004 Report Share Posted June 12, 2004 Absolutely Ray Yes humor helps me tremendously. Watching funny programs, movies, comedy tapes make me feel much better. Libraries often have videos you can rent for free. Reading books about people who triumphed or at the very least coped with some type of life problems make me feel better. There are also all kinds of humor books. The public library is one of my best resources and the price is just right. Listening to cheerful music makes me feel uplifted. We recently went to a ragtime concert and bought a CD that my husband and I both enjoy. There are all kinds of music that is uplifting and fun. I especially enjoy reading murder mysteries when I am having a wicked nasty day or days. Conversely I try to avoid sad movies, books etc. because those make me feel sad. There are a zillion free humor sites just type in free humor in your favorite search engine and voila! I use humor and laughter as a pain control. Recently, I ordered some golden oldies for my mom and dad who turn 86 this year. They love to live and laugh. Groups or those interested in becoming a Certified Laughter Leader can check out www.worldlaughtertour.com and www.laughteryoga.org. If you are able, it takes a lot of smiles to volunteer at a children's hospital, assisted living home, or the library. I look for laughter and fun where ever I can find it and I try and surround myself with people who have a good sense of humor. My group at my aquatics class at the YMCA is great for laughing...we are always having fun and we often say that we exercise our 'mouths' more than anything else. We go out for lunch once a month and it is usually my least pain day of the month. I recommend that everyone try and find things that make you laugh as much as possible. No need to get a needle in the butt or swallow a handful of pills. Feeding and watching the birds in my backyard provides many funny moments at low cost. Rinding my scooter and running over rude peoples toes also produces a laugh. OK OK I know I am a little weird but hey....IT WORKS. And then there is my bassett hound who provides a lot of laughs. I think he is a little weird too. Any dog that eats cat poo got to be weird... right? As I say. you can either look at the crap or look for the horse. What we deal with is far to serious.
