Guest guest
, When Hannah was first diagnosed she had really bad chronic watery stools. We decided to do a trial of gluten/dairy free and within a couple of days she had her first solid bowel movement in almost a year. After 3 months we slowly started to reintroduce gluten and there didn't seem to be any effect. She still had normal bowel movements and her behaviour continued to improve. We have at times, introduced dairy and it almost always results in bowel trouble and major behavioural problems so she continues to be dairy free now. The other thing that we found out while doing the dietary trials was that she is very intolerant of citric acid. Within a couple of hours of consuming anything with a large quantity of citric acid (most bottled fruit juices contain citric acid as a flavour inhancer) she has horrible watery stools and a severe rash. I feel that Hannah would probably do well on a gluten free diet, but it is incrediably difficult given her very limited diet and her oral sensitivities. She is a child who *would* starve herself if we didn't give her the few foods that she will accept. She basically lives on potatoes, bread, crackers, fortified soy milk, popcorn, chicken and fish. You'll probably notice that her list of food is all made up of beige-coloured food. She will not eat anything of colour. No fruit, no vegetables, no sauce. I haved gone out of my mind trying to get her to eat something different. I have worried about her health. It pains me to see her sisters sitting down with fresh fruits and veggies and Hannah constantly refuses it all. I feel like it's a losing battle for us. No matter how hard I try, she just refuses to eat what we want her to. Guest guest
, I do the diet. My boys are on suppliments and diet. They don't eat dairy and no milk. We watch sugar, and alot of additives. Our whole family Eats the same thing. It's not that much more expensive for us than it was before the diet, cause the whole family does it. I figure if it helps the kids, then it's good for us all. I haven't done the gluten/cassein free yet. However, with what we have done so far, no milk, dairy sugar and additives, I have seen a difference. I know there are a few people on here who may know more about the gluten/cassein free. O.k., speak up. Hope this helped a little. Hello to everyone else. Hope you are all fine. any new members, please introduce yourselves. Rhonda, hope all is well. I will be calling you or please feel free to call me. Keep us posted how you are doing. Guest guest
, I am new here to. I have just begun the diet for our family, all 6 of us!. Gluten/Casein free completely. It's a little more difficult getting older kids to switch I think. My 13yo is resisting and balking at every turn, but as soon as he tries dairy he starts getting headaches and having diarrhea, so I think he is learning that what we are doing is good for him. I have noticed a difference in my As daughter. She is more outgoing lately....so I am hoping it will continue to improve as the weeks go by. Join the GFCF Diet group there is alot of info there and some great recipes!. Also the GFCF Kids group is helpful. Hope this helps! Glenda~~~ > , I do the diet. My boys are on suppliments and diet. Guest guest
Thanks for the responses! Sharon and Andy, as far as the dairy goes, are there any landmines to look out for? I know we will have to use soy milk (tried it once, she hated it...any other options?), and that we will have to take out cheese (any options there? she would live on the stuff if we let her), no yogurt, or ice cream. But what about other, regular stuff? Is dairy used in making other things, like peanut butter, or noodles, or bread (go figure, these are all things she loves, but wouldn't be able to have on the gluten diet! GREAT! :-(( I guess what I'm asking is, with taking out dairy, do you have to read EVERY label? Are there hidden things that you have to be careful of, or do you just remove the obvious as stated above? Thanks! Re: Diet intervention , I do the diet. My boys are on suppliments and diet. Guest guest
nice website about a magazine called living without can be seen at http://www.livingwithout.com , some yummy sounding recipes! I am trying to gear up to do it too...........I am so worried about the "worse before it's better" thing. has never had milk without throwing up so it was a no brainer for me however he eats cheese to the exclusion of all else (go figure) so I am trying to substitue the cheese with vevggie cheeses and get chip dip that is dairy free and see what I can do that way. Guest guest
Hi - I'm short on time but I'll do my best! Soy is not your only option. You can use various types of rice milk, nut milks(many people use Blue Diamond almond milk)or my personal favorite dairy substitute, Darifree(available online thru Vance's Darifree, Miss Robens etc) Go to gfcfdiet.com, if you can afford it get their binder which is chock full of all the can-do's, how-to's and don't-do's you could ever need. My daughter has been gfcf for almost a year and a half so she accepts many more substitutions now than she did when the taste of 'real' dairy was still in her mouth.(though she still doesn't drink any milk substitute, though will accept it in cooking) we use Tofutti cream cheese, and tofutti slices for grilled cheese. There are to many landmines to list, basically the longer you are on the diet the easier it will be. Remember that chicken, mashed tatties and green beans make a gfcf meal with only a few substitutions in the potatoes. Make simple meals and replace a few favorites at a time. We pretty much went cold turkey and it was really difficult. NO casein, caseinate etc. Some brands of tuna have casien in them, some hotdogs have caseinate. Commence with the label reading, you'll be amazed what's in our food!! Deanna > Thanks for the responses! Sharon and Andy, as far as the dairy goes, are there any landmines to look out for? Guest guest
Make sure you check that it doesn't have Whey or any of the other milk proteins in it....that was my biggest problem when I was pregnant I thought I was being so good staying away from milk products by doing the non-milk milk they sell in the store with the milk and when I came down with pneumonia I found out it was because the non-milk actually had milk proteins ...I know mocha mix is really good and I used to be able to buy in the coffee section it was the powdered form of the mocha mix but in its generic form which is nice when you have to add milk to stuff but don't want to use milk Re: Re: Diet intervention nice website about a magazine called living without can be seen at http://www.livingwithout.com , some yummy sounding recipes! Guest guest
I keep thinking I should do that diet with , because he only eats carbs and junk food and milk. NO meats, NO veggies, and no fruit except bananas. I can't get him to take vitamins either. Does anyone have any tricks on how to get a kid to take a vitamin?? Guest guest
Hi , Your son's diet sounds like my daughter, Hannah's, diet! She eats NO fruit and the only veggie is mashed potatoes. It's impossible to try to get her to eat anything that isn't on her short list of acceptable foods. As for vitamins. I used to hide them (crushed up) in chocolate soy milk until we found out that chocolate was responsible for her hyperactivity and sleep problems. So, now that there is no chocolate to mask the taste of the vitamins, we haven't been able to get her to take them. At least the soy milk is fortified, so she *is* getting *some* nutrition. She basically lives on potatoes, pizza, toast, soy milk, water, chicken fingers, fish, and crackers. From time to time she will shock me and eat something that isn't on her list, like a cereal bar or something, but those times are few and far between. She will not eat a fruit or a veggie no matter what. Even if she is starving. She would rather starve.
