Guest guest
Hi guys, First I want to thank all of you for being there for us when we need questions answered. That said, help, I have another question. I had my DS on May 11th and my first weight in on May 18th, I haven't weighted sense then. So, I might be fearful for no reason (I will weight on the 29th of June ). But my fear is I am not losing the weight at the right rate as expected in the rapid loss period. I no-longer have explosive, urgent BM's, in fact I have been worried because I will go from 12 to 20 hours without a BM. Is this normal at my stage of the game? My husband says that he can really tell that I am losing, my mother in law says that she can't see it, and she will only say this when nailed down by my husband. I think that and all the past history of dieting and failing have me concerned that I will fail to live up to what the DS can due. I still am only getting any where from 5 to 20 grams of carbs a day (pro blend 55 and low fat milk ). I get all of my protein in and all of my calcium and water. I know that mileage will vary, however, what is the expected norm for the first six -- eight weeks post op? I am a new WLS not a revision. After the 29th I will be better, I hope, boy the fear of failure is a tuff one. Other then that fear everything about this surgery has been great. I have had a great recovery, I have lots of energy, I haven't been sick, I haven't had a problem with food or dairy (knock on wood). That might be the other reason I fear that the DS isn't working, because I have never felt bad. I do stop eating before I feel full, and I make sure I never eat everything on my plate, even if it is only a little bite left. Thanks for all of your help. Guest guest
Here are my statements. Maybe something here will help ya By 3 weeks out, I was mostly down to 1 BM a day. I am 6 feet tall and lost 27 lbs my first month. I lost approx. 160 lbs. total. Im now a BMI of 27 I too had a pretty easy recovery. I love this surgery!!! Most people couldn't tell I had lost any weight till I was 7 or 8 months out and lost almost 100 lbs. Takes a long time for it to be noticable. You can not measure how successful you are going to be based on a weekly snap shot. Statistically, 85% of DS patients lose 80% or more of their Excess weight. You are most likely not a statistical anommoly. In a nutshell... don't worry. You will be successful. You will lose the weight. There is nothing you can do now anyway- cept get in your water and protien -and perhaps excercise. Your body is going to do what your body is going to do. Try to enjoy the ride and not worry about the outcome. ---Kym in Seattle DS 6/5/02 BMI
Guest guest
Cheri First of all congrats! It really sounds like your doing wonderfully. And don't worry...losing weight does not depend on $hitting your brains out! lol The expected rate of weightloss is usually lower than most people tend to expect. What the doctors are looking for in expected weightloss during the first month is...1/2 to 1 pound a day average (15-30 lbs). After the first month they are looking for more like 1/4 to 1/2 pound a day AVERAGE (7.5-15 lbs.) If you take a middle ground number like 10 lbs a month AVERAGE by the end of your first year you can lose 120 pounds!!! That is considered rapid weightloss. Now remember we are talking " averages " here. That means when you calculate in a really good 30 pound loss the first month that allows for the zero weightloss of other months when your on the plateau from hell! It took 3 months before my cloths started to get loose and 6 months before I actually lost enough that I really needed to change cloths sized...lol...those elastic waist, stretchy cloths sure can cover a wide range! I vote to trust your husbands judgement here, when it come to deciding if you look like you have lost weight. He " sees " you better than you see yourself. He sees you naked and more often than ANYONE else. He has a better perspective. My husband would tell me every time I was loosing just before the scales would actually show it. I learned to trust his " eye " . If he said " your losing again " I would go jump on the scales and sure enough the plateau would be broken. Remember this whole thing is a Process, a Journey....not an Event. Also your Fears and anxiety are NORMAL. It's only Human to feel that way from time to time during this process. One never knows exactly where this journey will lead you. All you can do is try to Eat right and exercise. Then... what will be WILL BE. It's partly " good behavior " and taking advantage of your " window of opportunity " and part plain old " luck " . Hugs Jo
