Dear Becky, The airforce will not let me go with the condition of my

daughters health. They also consider this a remote assignment. Thanks, what

was it like over there? We have only been stationed in Europe that is pretty

easy assignment.

Becky, thank you for telling me about Korea. From what my husband was

telling me it has not changed much. Except the air base is now a hardened

facility. Meaning they have barracks and a base exchange and a library. It

was much nicer in Europe, almost as nice as the united states but you had no

grocery stores. But the medical care was wonderful the doctors even made

house calls. Thanks for sharing and sorry it ended up in divorce but

sometimes that is good too! ( hope that did not offend you.) if my husband

touched one over there he would be gone. I still remember the commercials

overseas about going home clean. ( If you know what I mean). God Bless and

take care will let you know what occurs, thanks for your support.

Hi Annette, well I lived there in 1984 and 1985 so it's been awhile. I think

it hasn't changed a whole lot from what I've been told from others. It

wasdifferent depending where you were. in Yong-song (Seoul), it was noisy,

busy, cars, bikes, taxi's, etc. Lots of tall buildings, just a busy city.

But just a little ways out of Seoul, it was very different. Right outside my

" apartment " balcony, I looked down upon a rice paddy, and the landlady

worked out there, barefoot and with the conical shaped hats to protect from

the sun. So it was two very different worlds. I have a real bias against the

fact that prostution was legal there. I had a real problem with that, but

hey, that's why he's my EX-husband, LOL. In the whole " vil " or village,

there was only four American women, myself, another white girl, a black

girl and a Puerto Rican girl. I mention this because the Koreans just didn't

understand how all four of us were Americans. I had several discussions with

different Korean women, they didn't accept that my black and Puerto Rican

friends were Americans, too. It was just very hard to explain to them, I

don't think I ever got it across. The language barrier didn't help, I'm

sure. I guess you could say it was a pretty negative experience for me, I

wish it hadn't been. I reallly wanted to like it. I remember once the air

raid sirens went off, blackout was enforced and the MP's came knocking on

everyone's door to keep lights off. Then they never came back to let you

know what was up(ex was in the field). Scary. The sconic booms from the jets

was just deafening. so much air traffic there, helicopters and the like. I

was scheduled to visit Panmonjon the same weekend the truce was broken and

there was firing back and forth for several hours. Needless to say, the trip

to the DMZ was cancelled! It was quite an experience for an 18 year old. I

was not supposed to go either, but just because it was an unaccompanied

tour. I can definately understand your not being allowed to go, the medical

care is not what you would need. I mean, I can't imagine where you'd go for

any care at all? Seoul? that's an hour bus ride, standing up. The military

hospitals-well, forget them. I hear Europe is an altogether different kind

of assignment. I wanted to go to Germany, but Korea was what we got stuck

with, LOL. Well, now that I've offended any and all Korean-Americans, I

should of emailed this to you directly, huh? :-) Take care, Becky (mom to
