Re: Massive Hair Loss...

The hair loss can take a very long time to resolve.

$ynthroid is not the right med for everyone. Many of us need dessicated porcine thyroid or a synthetic combination of T3 and T4.

In the DFW area, we are recommending Dr. Marcus Spurlock across the street from Presby Dallas. He does not have just one protocol. He will prescribe whatever thyroid med you may need. (It might not be the one you want, but he will work with you.) I was just going to see him for "other" hormones, but he is now also managing my thyroid cancer and diabetes.

This happened to me too on Synthroid. I had to find a new doctor that told me I shouldn't be losing my hair and prescribed me Armour.  Only after I got off the Synthroid did the hair loss stop.

Hi, all! New to group after being diagnosed with Hypo after delivering my third child. Hopeful you all can help me understand these awful things I'm going through. Ranges in TSH have been anywhere from 84 to 34 - no where near the 0.5 - 5.0 normal.

At first, sypmtoms were simply mild and only had trouble losing baby weight and experienced heavy periods. Only found high TSH level after a routine blood test done for insurance purposes. OGYN did notice a small goiter. But now after being on Synthroid, have experienced massive hair loss (have lost over 1/3rd of my hair in just 2 weeks (!), constant numbness in my arms and legs, and terrible mood swings.

My doctor (who I think might be crazy... Dr. Castenada in Plano - anyone know her?) says I should simply cut my hair short and tells me that my high dose of Synthroid (125 mg) is not to blame. But I feel like the crazy sypmtoms have only happened since I started on the high dose.

Does anyone have any insight? Should I stop taking the Synthroid? If I leave my doctor, what are some things I should insist on with the next doctor? How can I stop this hair loss? At this rate, I will be wearing a scarf by the end of the month.

Please help!

Thank you!

Just looked up Dr. Spurlock and, unfortunately, he's not on my insurance...

Not many of the better thyroid docs are in network for insurance or Medicare. Spurlock will use a lab that is in-network for your insurance (Labcorp, CPL or Quest) and those labs should be paid at the in-network rate.

Elmore takes some, but not all insurance, but she has kept some patients undermedicated, as opposed to most doctors who may keep most or all of their thyroid patients undermedicated.

What is your health worth? Give up lattes, cigarettes, movies, eating out, recreational shopping, vacation trips, processed food. Have a garage sale, take an extra part time job, babysit, walk dogs, housesit, carpool, max out your credit card, sell your jewelry (Gold is over $1000 an ounce. Even silver is over $20.) sell your grandmother. . . . .well, OK. . . . . . who would buy her?

I am new to the group, also hypo. Jan recommends that we see environmental/alternative med docs for this very reason. I am just starting out with Dr. Alfred in . He was partners with Dr. Rea who is now in partnership with Dr. Spurlock. Dr. does take insurance, and I know he is flexible because he's working with me on T3 only. I'll find out about his comfort with Armour and let you all know. Hope ths helps.

In fact, and rest of group, I'll be seeing Dr. tomorrow at 1:30. If there are some questions other than or more specific than whether he is opposed to prescribing Armour, I'd be willing to ask them for the benefit of the group.
