You are correct - both Hashi's and Graves are autoimmune thyroid disorders and result in your body attacking your own thyroid.  Hashi's is the most common form of hypothyroidism, but you can be hypo and not have Hashi's although the antibody tests alone are really not enough to rule out Hashi's.  As far as problems converting, that's not necessarily the case for folks with Hashi's - the issue with Hashi's is that your thyroid is no longer consistently producing the right amount of thyroid hormone.  And, you do not have to have autoimmune thyroid disease to have problems with converting. We are all exposed to a high level of environmental toxins and that alone can cause conversion problems and blocking of receptors.  Mark Starr's book " Hypothyroidism Type II " does an excellent job of explaining all of this.

Many folks with autoimmune thyroid disease often will cycle from hyper - hypo, etc. before they finally reach a point where they are diagnosed as Hashi's or Graves.   This is one of the reasons why more frequent and consistent testing (same time of day, same time between last dosage and testing, etc.) is necessary when you are working to find your optimal dose.  That's really why many of us end up with lower  (or suppressed) TSHs as that minimizes the amount of thyroid hormone that your thyroid will try to produce (since it's not producing the right amounts anyways) and thus providing you with consistent levels - as consistent as they can be when you have to add it yourself and why the time released works well for many.

Hi, all

I been reading on the web about Hasi and Graves. I think i understand if your autibody is attacking the thyroid then would you have problems converting? or is it hasi and that is what is called a hypor problem. i know you need to get tested to confirm it but not everyone has hasi right. you can still have a hypothyroidism and be hasi free? thank you.
