Guest guest
Hi there I'm a single mom of an eight year old kiddo (DS) who is also Autistic (high functioning), ADHD, and OCD. For years, docs have found a slightly enlarged thyroid on DS but no one would ever do a thyroid panel. We've had years of behavior and learning problems. We took DS to some ENT specialists in Austin, Texas who, when they found the enlaged thyroid, did labs. The thyroid labs were: Thyroxine (T4) Free - 1.44 (0.90 - 1.67) TSH: 0.619 (0.660 - 4.410) Triodothyronine: 4.3 (2.7 - 5.2) Vitamin D - 31 (32 - 100) Over the past few days, DS has been significantly more hyper than usual. He's also had real problems getting to sleep and staying asleep. He's been up til (betwen) 11:30 and 1:00 a.m., and has been getting up when he uses the bathroom. This after a full day of playing outside and swimming. He has also had bouts of extreme fatigue where he just falls over and sleeps. This has been a cycle throughout the past year. He is on meds for the other conditions, but this cycle predates these meds (with the exception of anti-virals, methylated vitamins B6, B12 and D). We've also seen neurologists and had MRIs, sleep studies, etc. with nothing showing. Austin docs want to wait three months and test again. They tell me that the labs were just a snapshot of a day and not important. They also tell me that his inability to sleep is a result of the anti-virals. That will be in the middle of school...not as in I hate taking him out of school to get the labs but we'll have three months of severe inability to concentrate, distractibility, and behavior problems before we test again. I keep hearing that many docs won't do anything if the labs are not low enough. How low is low enough? What does it take?? I also have a conflict with finding another doc as it was the Austin docs that finally found it in the first place and are treating his Vitamin D deficiency as well. My son tells me that his heart beats really fast when he can't get to sleep. Thanks for any input! ~Mom
