Guest guest
A child I see has been having some BIG difficulties acquiring tacts. He is manding quite well and verbally. Receptively he is identifying items by feature and function and all the skills before that are mastered. Intraverbally he has mastered MANY fill-ins as well as all the skills before fill-ins (singing songs, etc). Tacts are a BIG goose-egg! He has not mastered a single goal under Tacts. Here is what we are trying and I wanted to know if anyone else has done this before to get tacts. I have typically seen the use of tacts to link them to intraverbals. However with this child we have begun using his intraverbal fill-ins to get tacts. Does that make sense? For example he will fill in airplane if you say, " You fly in an ..... " So we are holding up a picture of an airplane when he fills in the word, " airplane. " Then we are quickly asking, " What is it? " while holding up the picture of the airplane. Currently we are using reinforcing items for him to label such as Pooh. We are using his intraverbal fill-in " Winnie the..... pooh " to get him to label pooh, Bob and....larry, etc.. So far it's working and he has mastered about 5 tacts, but it's still slow-moving. We are desperate at this point. We have been working on tacts for 4 months now and only 5 have been mastered...and that within the past few weeks, after we started using fill-ins. Just 6 months ago he began talking and his intraverbals have really taken off! Now it's getting to a point where we NEED tacts to further progress in other areas such as receptive and intraverbals!!! Any advice is much appreciated! Shauna
