Guest guest
I have low vitamin d that is completely out of range and the doc wants to me to bring my levels back up. What I don't understand is why its out of range how it might affect my thyroid levels. I know its a prohormone which is why I'm concerned about taking it. Anyone else here take vit d? Guest guest
Here's a good article on the topic:http://www.goodhormonehealth.com/VitaminD.pdfOne of the most common reasons for low levels is lack of absorption. One of the most common reasons for poor absorption is undiagnosed celiac (the gluten flattens the villi in the intestine so that nutrients aren't absorbed). I take vitamin D and also try to get some sun regularly as that is the most effective way to increase vitamin D. Interestingly, I used to burn very easily but since I started taking selenium, I rarely burn - I can work in the yard during the heat of the day and not burn. Here's a research article where they used selenium (and other nutrients like beta carotene) and found that it did protect against sun damage. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12239424 And, here's one where they used selenium topically:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1489715They have also found a correlation between low selenium and melanoma. Research shows that selenium can kill cancer cells: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20157610Selenium is also essential for thyroid function:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20810577 Please note however that this is something you should discuss with your doctor as you can take too much selenium. The upper level recommendation is 200 mcg BUT you also MUST consider dietary sources - Brazil nuts for example has high levels. B. Guest guest
My vitamin D was near the bottom of its range despite the fact that I was getting 800-1200 iu from various supplements. I am now taking 2000 iu of D3 and we will see if I need more next time I get tested. I know folks who are taking a lot more than that. My new hormone doc will surely have an opinion as to how much I need. >> I have low vitamin d that is completely out of range and the doc wants to me to bring my levels back up.> > What I don't understand is why its out of range how it might affect my thyroid levels. Guest guest
BTW, a sign that you are taking too much selenium is that your hair will turn orange - literally I had several inches of orange hair before I figured this out. A hair stylist refused to believe that I had not colored my hair. I reduced my supplement to 100 mcg daily and have not had orange hair since. This is really why you need to make sure to keep a list of all supplements and provide that to your doctor so that they are aware. In particular some supplements as we know interfere with thyroid absorption (minerals in particular). . > > > > > > > I have low vitamin d that is completely out of range and the doc wants to > > me to bring my levels back up. > > > > What I don't understand is why its out of range how it might affect my > > thyroid levels. Guest guest
Mine was(is?) low too. It must have something to do with the thyroid problems? I take 2000iu daily in addition to what's in my calcium. Lynn I have low vitamin d that is completely out of range and the doc wants to me to bring my levels back up.
