Guest guest
Hi Kaylene, Oh believe me, I'll be asking questions. The exact wording on the surgery papers is " Iliac crest bone graft " . I'm not sure what that means yet, but it don't sound good. From the little reading I've done - they prefer to use your own bone because it tends to heal faster and does not get rejected. I'm hoping for cadaver bone. -Jeff ----- Original Message ----- > Hi Jeff > Yes giving a bone graft is very painful. Have you considered using one > from a cadaver? There are a variety of pros and cons.
Guest guest
Oh Jeff, I hope you read this. I was in an accident in 1997. I destroyed my right leg. They wanted to fuse it but I refused. So I went into a 2 hour surgery which lasted 8. My surgeon was incredible!!! I had to have a bone graft from my iliac crest. They basically take bone from off the inside of your pelvic bone and use it with bone putty to form new bone. You do heal much faster with this type of bone because it is you! I'm also a nurse. After 5 surgeries to rebuild degeneration of my knee has begun. I'm at that special age for woman's bones to do this anyway. I went to a new surgeon becaue I live in a different state and he suggested I consider bone grafting from cadaver for a new tibia and femur. Both are degenerating from the stress. Well there is not way in the world I will consider this. I even took the info back to my main surgeon who told me don't ever let anyone use cadaver bone on me. That even though they say they are sterile, people, even ones he has known personally, have gotten horrible infections and died from rejecting this new bone. So you need to continue to gather info. For some people the hip bone graft or iliac crest graft is more sore than the surgery. I didn't think it was that bad. Pain is simply pain to me and I had two sore spots instead of one! <smile> That's why they give pain medicine!!! I had to write because I'm more experienced in all this than I want to be. Good luck and let us know how you are doing. Love, Amy
