Guest guest
Did you call them to find out whether or not it is covered? With Caremark, no dessicated thyroid was listed in the formulary, but when I called about Armour, they said to just send in the prescription. I am also confused as to whether you are referring to compounded dessicated thyroid as "Naturethroid" or if you mean Naturethroid by RLC. If your problem with Armour is the new, more toxic microcrystalline cellulose, then you will not be happy with Naturethroid, either. It also has the new mcc. I have been pretty happy with the ERFA, but I may try the WIP compounded dessicated thyroid in olive oil at some time in the future. If you use any other compounders, be aware of which fillers they are using. Timed release products almost always contain mcc. Another alternative is the new Acella Thyroid which Walgreen's is dispensing when your doc fails to specify "brand medically necessary." It does not contain mcc. I does contain dextrose and maltodextrin = corn. I do not know anyoe who has used it. >> In researching switching from Armour to Naturethroid, I'm finding Naturethroid is not covered by my insurance (United Healthcare).> > So, searching these forums and Lowcarbfriends, I've noticed some people use Women's International Pharmacy or local compounders, which is a bit pricey.> > I also read WIP may be a bit "weaker" in their formulation, which I realize is based on opinions...but I would like to know if anyone else has experienced that.> > I'm not sure I'm tolerating the fillers in Armour, and if I switch, I'd like to have the best possible chance at finding a good pharmacy either in DFW area or online, and at a good price, if possible.> > I am also willing to try ERFA if anyone thinks that is a good possiblity. I noticed in the LINKS section there are several mentioned...is there a favorite?> > Sorry to be so "medically needy" these days...but I'm really trying to feel better for myself and my young kids....hubby wouldn't mind, either, poor guy.> > Thank you so much.>
Guest guest
I think you are confused because I'm confused. Doctor thinks I am not responding well to reformulated Armour, which I've been getting through mail order. The prescription she wrote was for Naturethroid., 2 grains. That's all I can tell. The mail order pharmacy I use doesn't supply that, so in checking around, places like Walmart don't have it, either. I just assumed it was something a specialty pharmacy would carry or could order for me. The idea, if I understand doctor correctly, I can try this formula for awhile and if it doesn't work, we can try compounded NDT, which, as I'm reading through this forum and others, can have fillers that could be just as bad for me. This is all so confusing for me. I know the doctor said, though she can't recommend it because it is a manufactured out of the USA she has patients getting ERFA from Canada. Since the script says Naturethroid, I suppose I could ask to have it written that just says Thyroid and try the Canadian form of Armour. I am so new at this, and very uninformed. I'm also finding it hard to make good searches and decisions. The initial relief of finding out what is wrong with me has given way to a fear that I am never going to get all the myriad of questions answered and find the right levels that I need to get better. Seems like nothing about being hypo is simple, is it? Guest guest
Thank you SO much to all who replied to all my current questions. Your help and encouragement is VERY much appreciated. I'm going to try the ERFA from Universal Drugstore. I'll let you know if it helps. I seem to feel a tad bit better on 2 grains (split dose) of my Armour supply. Now, I'm on a quest to find out about progesterone. I'm very low, but have never tried replacement hormone. It seems there is so much conflicting information out there, I'm sure I'll be confused about this for awhile, too. If anyone knows anything to watch out for as far as progesterone and THYROID interactions, please let me know. I am assuming bio-identicals either come from yams or soy, and that seems to ring a bell as a possible interaction with thyroid. I know it is best to research on my own, but if anyone has a " been there/done that " experience, I'd love to hear it. Thank you again, K
