Guest guest
Dear Kathy: I have used a number of reading programs with various ASD children and almost always find that they are stronger sight word learners than more phonetic-based approaches. I have used and highly recommend the book, Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome, by Oelwein (It can be found at www.amazon.com and in Canada through www.parentbookstore.com). It is a sight-based approach (loosely based on ABA principles of mastery teaching) and works very well when combined with the child's highly motivating topics/toys/interests. I've done many individual " books " based on the Train, Pokemon, and Digimon characters. Hope this helps, Tracie (Speech-Language Pathologist and trained in ABA and AVB)
Guest guest
Dear Tracie and List, I had the title mixed up. The book Tracie mentions is the same book, but I just had it backwards. I believe you can find it in most and Nobles now as well. Jennie
