Guest guest
Okay, a couple of issues here. My son is scheduled trained for urine, meaning that if I take him every two hours, he'll stay dry and go in the potty. BUT!! If I forget, he won't initiate, and will wet his pants. How do I get my son to initiate?? Initially when we tried training him, he GOT that his pants should stay dry, and he'd hold it all in until we took him. I had him evaluated at Kennedy Krieger in early June, and he was dry the WHOLE DAY even though he at the time wouldn't use institutional bathrooms. When we got home, he let loose! And initially, he was even dry at night. But somewhere between early June and now, he lost that understanding of dry pants being a good and desirable thing. Basically he probably started practicing accidents due to DH or me or sitters or therapists not taking him potty and the sky didn't fall in so he decided accidents weren't such a bad thing. And now if he needs to go, he wets himself (although he will hold it for up to 2 hours). And he is no longer dry at night. *sigh*. Well the good news is he'll use any potty now, even institutional ones. How can I make wet pants aversive, or dry pants incredibly rewarding?? I need creative ideas, since the old skittles & starbursts routine is getting to be cliche around here. One idea I had was to make up a social story with visuals. Has anyone ever tried this? Another idea was to take away a favorite toy or art projects away if he has an accident. I kind of hate to do this though because then he might space out on me and just lay on the floor rather than do something else productive. This brings me to issue number two. BMS. How do I get my son to put them in the potty?? He won't. If I catch him beginning the process, he'll pull it all back in and refuse to go when I put him on the potty. Do I just make him SIT until he puts something in, even if he is screaming and crying?? But won't that make the potty itself aversive?? *sigh*. He's done BMS maybe four times in his entire life in the potty. Well any ideas from people who have been there and done that, would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm getting kind of discouraged. Would one of those potty training in a day books have anything of value for our particular situation? Thanks.... p.s. my son will be 4 in late July if that matters any...
