Guest guest
Hi, This might be more consultant directed questions, but for any parents who using a strictly VB syle program for school aged kids, maybe you can help me understand some questions I have. When I have read or attended a seminar regarding VB I have not seen it directed specifically toward the school aged child, and saw tapes of a variety of kids, but not necessarily in " classroom " settings. For those parents who adhere to this style of programming or for consultants trained to deliver it I have some specific questions; Do you use any kinds of visual supports for your programming, activity schedules, daily schedules, work schedules for reinforcers etc. Is it part of the VB philosophy to use or not use these supports? Are there functional activities built into the programming, esp for those kids who will need to target and strengthen self help and community skills. Are any techniques utilized outside of the VB model , such as the PCDI activity schedules for instance, or PECS? For the children who do not become fluently or conversationally verbal are augmentative devices considered at some point in time, and if so which ones are favored? Is consideration given to visual cuing if verbal is not getting the desired results? Are there specific preferences for reading programs, phonics versus sight reading? How is the choice made for which to begin based on what criteria? I know I have seen in the videos extensive use of T.V./Movies. This may work well for the at home programs, but for the in school programming what reinforcement techniques are recommended and in what sort of delivery? For example, in our program we have a work schedule and he gets to chose his reinforcer and he can see his schedule and now how much more there is do before the reinforcer is delivered. This is always changed and measured based on the difficulty of the task. How would you deliver reinforcement in a VB program in a school setting? I have seen the T.V. iturned off and used as a mode to shape the child's cooperation and performance. For control of a child in a school setting without the T.V. what general principles do they suggest for behavioral control. What would be suggested for instance if a child does NOT want to leave the Gym and has a full blown meltdown, I know what we do, but what would we do if were using the VB method. I would love to know from those of you who are doing these things in school since that is the setting I am currently involved in and that is the one that of course poses the most challenges. Perhaps there are some other things we can try to help solidify our efforts. Thanks for any information. Cate
