You psychiatrist sounds a bit scary to me! My psychiatrist is extremely well versed in psychiatric pharmacology. In other words, he knows right off the top of his head exactly what drugs he may prescribe, and which ones may be potentially dangerous to the liver. Your Doc sounds like he is just passing the buck, saying that you have to talk to a Hep C specialist to recommend psychiatric drugs, which most Hep C Docs will not do. You need a better shrink for your son, in my opinion. Secondly, exactly what Doc is your son seeing now for his HCV condition? He/she should be able to refer you to the most competent Psychiatrist in your area, and one who will know exactly what drugs are safe for the liver. Your hep Doc does not know this info, but your shrink's duty and obligation is to advise you as to the answers. Wow, these "Docs" continue to amaze me. You rally have to put your feet down, and ask the Psychiatrist exactly WHY he doesn't know what drugs are safe for the liver, kidney, etc. That's his damned job! Get a new Doc and report the existing one to the AMA!To: Hepatitis_C_Central From: mightysmom@...Date: Sat, 13 Nov 2010 03:18:42 +0000Subject: psych meds - resources? My son is on some psych meds to help with anxiety, etc. At 13, he is growing rapidly and hormones are NOT his friend!!! His psychiatrist wants to change/modify meds, but we have been "on hold" since we discovered his Hep. C is progressing. Our local hepatologists have been unable to give any guidance about which meds are the safest for the liver. We will be going to Hopkins for a consultation at some point, but the negotiation for out of state treatment could take awhile. Does anyone know of resources or physicians that his psychiatrist might contact so that we can move forward. Many Thanks! I really appreciate the resources and support found here!
