Guest guest
Debi, Good Luck. We will be doing the same thing this summer. We have decided not to go to ESY this year in hopes that we can use the time & the extra manpower (we are currently running 25hrs of home based ABA) to assist with the training. My daughter will be 5 in May. She is also non-verbal. We have problems with her keeping her clothes on. She likes to be naked & will play her in her own mess. I just ordered a book that I hope will help us. Its called Toilet Training for Individuals with Autism & Related Disorders; A Comprehensive Guide for Parents & Teachers by Wheeler. The review states Over 200 toilet training tips! More than 40 case examples with solutions. Large paperback, over 120 pages. I hope this will provide some help to us Buyer A child is like a butterfly in the wind, some fly faster, some fly harder but they all fly the best they can. Each one is different, each one is beautiful and each one is special. potty training funny We decided tomorrow to seriously begin potty training Allie. I took her to Target to pick out " big girl panties " . She refused to pick out any. Then we got one last pack of pullups. She held the pullups the entire way home. When we got inside, I tried to get her to show her new panties to her daddy. She opened the pullups, took off her wet one, put on a clean one, then carried the pack down the hall and got into bed, pullup package still in her lap. You think it's gonna be " easy " on this one??? Debi
Guest guest
Debbi laughing much on this she to be telling you firmly she to not want to give up her security of her beloved pull-ups LOL she to know and she to understand so she is ready but take the separations slowly of her demand of the pull-ups. Such as leave the panties out and in view of her and make no attempts to put them on her yet, just talk about how pretty or the pattern to them but make no signals of demands. Let her to see you wear them or if has a older sibling with them let her see sissy to wear them too. but no demands on her yet. Act casual with them as though they are just a new decor in the room or bathroom. after about 2 or so weeks place them in a pack of pull ups and leave them in their and when you run out of the pull ups say to her Oh, no , no more pull ups. Ali all we have is the panties left look all gone no more pull ups if she refuses then just put on her back on her clothes with no panties and not to give in with pull ups, but is she to refuse then let her to be nude for a brief time with no bottoms on. She might be to not like this feeling but if she keeps going back say again ALL GONE, Just Panties. It might be to take a few days battles with this. Important though do not match the idea with potty training and wearing panties or big girls or she may choose not to go potty in the toilet thinking if she does this equates panties that she does not want. Once she is use to the panties you can then match it to potty and say try hard to not get you panties wet. Once she is to like them she might be to try hard to keep them dry. If she is not ready then wait and try again in a few months. You may be to have to chunk the training into steps to over come each step so to not increase anxiety in the concept of being toilet trained. Guest guest
Thanks for the suggestions, Sondra! I will definitely refer back to your post. I wish you all could see how cute she is carrying around that bag of pullups. I think someone asked her age, she is 3 yrs 9 months. She is showing all the signs, not wetting all night, staying dry for long periods during the day. She also puts her hand on her crotch when she's wetting or pooping, as if she's noticing the sensation. My first daughter trained by 2 1/2 years, and I'm seeing very much the same behaviors. I also got her a book that has stickers and a place to stick them every time she goes potty. I'm gonna put her potty seat in the den in front of the television and she can only watch her favorite video when she's sitting on the potty. Her teacher says with her we have to find a reward so much worth the effort that she will be willing to pee/poop to get it. I figure after she gets used to that I'll start moving the potty a couple of feet closer to the toilet every day. She's so routine-focused that I really think once she gets in the habit she won't want to go back. I'll take advice from anyone wanting to give it! Guest guest
Hi all! My daughter is almost 4 1/2 yrs old and autistic. Last week we decided to try toilet training our son, he is almost 2 1/2 and NT. We tried a few days but he didn't get the hang of it at all so we decided to wait a few weeks and see if he was ready then. But my autistic daughter decided that sitting on the toilet is fun, she has not had a nappy on since and we have had no accidents, she tells us when she needs to go, she is dry all night, and can hang on if we are out shopping or in the car. We are just amazed, it is a true miracle, up until now she has been taking her nappy off and playing in anything she did. She goes to a special development school for early intervention 3 days a week and they have her on the toilet there now too. We were hopeing she would be toilet trained by the end of the year but were not very hopeful, so this is nothing short of a miracle to us, and we didn't have to do anything, it was all her copying what we were trying with her brother! She is such a special little girl and is constantly amazing us! Cheers > Re: potty training funny > > > Thanks for the suggestions, Sondra! I will definitely refer back to > your post. Guest guest
Debi I would not be to set her potty by the TV as this could cause a issues of behavior when you then want to move it back to the potty room. I would be to set the video up on a shelf in the bathroom and when she meets her goal of so many potties in the toilet and no accidents each day she can have her favorite video. Such as make a laminated strip with how ever many times you feel is reasonable for her to do to get the video. For example 3 times in potty with no accidents as a starter and then make 3 laminated smiley faces and for each times she goes potty give her a smiley to Velcro onto the counter strip, once she has 3 smilies up she get video and make a big deal of it with clapping and hugging and such . If she does not make it then keep encouraging her to try again tomorrow, but dont be to give in to let her see the video at her request as the video needs to stay as the reinforce. Videos for many ASD kids work because new ones come out often enough to change the reinforcer to. Sondra
