This girl was close enough to me that the smoke was drifting in my direction. For me, I have had to make many sacrifices in my life or pay the consequences of my selfish deeds with asthma attacks that could have life threatening. Miserable disease to have to contend with, but has throughout my life, made me a lot more compassionate human being to my fellow man than if I never had this disease. She doesn't smoke in her apartment or the car because I have to be in both. She's also watchful when we're out for other smokers. I'm just glad I saw this girl in time to prevent major problems. I quit smoking 10 years ago because of my asthma and I realize now that I was pretty self centered about it. I'm now reaping the results of that. I'm also now working on losing some of the weight I've gained over the years because I've eaten too much over time. I, too, am more compassionate for people with problems because I have to live with so many. Guest guest Posted August 8, 2009 Report Share Posted August 8, 2009 It sounds like you have a great daughter and considers you when smoking so she doesn't interfere with your situation. I also gave up smoking a number of years ago or just not breathe any more, lol. Probably the hardest habit that I have ever had to get over. Only the select few can so adda boys to you for doing it. I have a close friend that couldn't get off of the smokes and she now has emphsima and has been on oxygen and isolated to her house. She is in the final stages and she is a young lady. A terrible way to go. I also have to lose weight so I can get off of these terrible drugs I am on and their side effects. The blood pressure medicine is a real killer, especially for men. I have changed my diet about a month and a half ago and have lost 15 lbs. I feel a lot better and my blood pressure is going down which is a good thing. It isn't easy changing your favorite junk foods and replacing them with good one, but a day at a time I have been able to do it. I hope you are as lucky as I have been and can start to reverse the effects of bad eating choices. In some areas of the country at some times of the year, that's an enormous sacrifice. Thinking about Fargo in January... Miami in August... you've got to feel compassion for someone who can't kick *that* habit! I agree that's no excuse for making other people suffer, though. She inherited your genes, so she has the potential to develop asthma if she continues to smoke. Hopefully she realizes the consequences of the choice she is making.
