Guest guest
It is better to use chalk instead. If your grip needs reinforcing, start training forearms and grip strength more. You don't like having calluses? Deal with it. I'll try to remember to check and see what else this book said about it later. I don't use either other than using gloves for pullups since hanging on my pullup bar seems to rip my hands up and I don't want to deal with it. Seriously, it's not the calluses or forearm strength that compromises my grip. If I can feel my grip compromised I put on my straps. It's sweat rolling all the way down to my hands which is a pain in the ass to me. Although I've seen people wear sweat bands all the way up to their elbows so I could do that. I read that over-reliance on straps will lead to underdeveloped forearms, but they are okay to use on failure sets. Andy

I heard that also, but who would want to fail on deadlifts being strapped to a couple hundred pounds, my lower back is crying just thinking about it. Guest guest
This is an interesting thread, and note that no women have chimed in here (or maybe I missed a reply from a chick). Anyway, I stay away from straps except for heavy work on DLs, but I do wear gloves on the cheese-grater barbells and dumbbells. You all know which ones I'm talking about. For the exact opposite reason from Brett - I *don't* want callouses. I am just vain enough about my hands that I was actually horrified to discover callouses on my palms at the end of C1 way back when. It's manly to have callouses though, so I won't hold any of you guys to wearing gloves to protect your delicate palms. Jen B. P.S. I *do* keep my nails short for lifting though, so I'm not totally obsessed with vanity about my hands. LOL

I read that over-reliance on straps will lead to underdeveloped forearms, but they are okay to use on failure sets. ______________ That's the decision I came to with straps. I used to use them all the damn time for sets. Then I thought hmmm... I need to work on my grip too. The only time I ever use them is on the last set when I'm really going heavy, or if it's getting toward the end of a workout and I can barely hold onto a 20lb dumbell. Ahhh... good times. Guest guest
I'll chime in with ya' Jen! I always use gloves b/c my hands get too sweaty and I don't want callouses either! I don't find that it keeps me from developing the grip. In fact - I started seeing muscles in my forearms last week and got so excited I almost dropped a dumbell on my head! I have been resisting using straps though. So much so that I am likely short changing my legs and back a bit to accomodate the development of my forearms.
