And one more favorite Nada quote-not really a cliche- stolen from the

movie/play " A Lion in Winter " ... " if I were on fire no one'd piss on

me to put me out! " Then my brother would always roll his eyes and

whisper, " She stole that from 'A Lion in Winter.' What an idiot. "

This is good. I am sitting here smiling for a change :)

Hi ,

And thanks to everyone for the happy birthdays! They meant a lot to

me. Here is my nada's cliche:

That's the pot calling the kettle black!

She would say this over and over again throughout my childhood. As I

write this to all of you, I understand, that was projection in action!

Hey Charlotte,

My Nada loved that one too, and also, whenever she would be utterly

annoying and awful and complain about service(in a store, resturant,

school, anyplace)---after we left she would always say, " the squeaky

wheel get gets the oil! " Her voice is like a quacking duck! Quack,

quack, quack, the squeaky wheel quack, quack, quack... " UGH!

My mom never spat cliches at us. I am glad about that! I do recognize

the humor too when i can though. It is the only way to survive it

sometimes. We offspring sometimes try to gauge her responses in

advance and laugh about them. Of course, we don't share things with

her unless absolutely unavoidable. It is still fun for us to wonder

what she would say or do. Sometimes.

Once my husband and I took her to a restaurant. She was upset with the

way they packed up the remains of our lunch to go (they did do it

wrong -- they put all from my plate and hers in one meal box). Her

reaction was way out of bounds embarrassing. She screamed. It was

horrifying at the time, but now I can't help laughing. I think my

laughter could easily turn to tears right now.

A favorite of my nada was always 'you can dish it out, but you can't

take it.' What an absurd statement from one's parent, huh?

Oh yes, " life's not fair " when I'd say 'but mom, that's not fair.' I

think it really hit home w/understanding when I watched " Mommy

Dearest " and Joan said the same thing to . I didn't feel so

bad anymore- like I could continue down my journey of trying to make

life fair rather than giving in to these Kooks!

I have watched this conversation with lots of interest. While my BP mom

never used cliché's my step-adopted dad did. His usual one was " one day you

are going to let your mouth overload your ass, then you will have no one to

blame because you make your bed & you have to lay in it. I understood what

he said so well, that I made sure that my bed was well made every morning

before I left the house.
