Guest guest
Okay, I have another dilemma here that I'd love some input on. My son is on day 85 of Nizoral, Day 25 of Valtrex. Our DAN! says he's been on Nizoral long enough and it's time to switch - he suggests Diflucan. Here's my dilemma. Both stool cultures we've done with our son (spaced 9 months apart) both indicated a resistance to Diflucan. In fact, it said that ketoconozole and nystatin were the only drugs he was sensitive to (out of diflucan, nizoral, sporonax and nystatin). So if we switch to diflucan and he his specific type of yeast is resistant to it, what would be the point? And how long would you do a trial of diflucan if this were the case? I'm not sure what other options we have, but as of now, either the dosage of nizoral we are giving him currently (50mg a day) isn't enough or his yeast has become resistant to this drug because he is acting very " yeasty " (drunk walk, goofy, laughing inappropriately, spacy, bad poops, etc.) I'd ask our DAN! his opinion, but he seems to be more parent directed vs. giving me direction which is really what I need because I'm new to this and I want/need some experienced opinions. He didn't even keep my son's previous test results so I'm sure he doesn't remember off the top of his head. Any thoughts on this? Would you switch to Diflucan if your child showed a resistance to it both times on his stool culture? What other options do we have if we're on Valtrex? Naturals aren't strong enough right? Oh gosh - I feel lost. Thanks in advance for any guidance, experience you can share. ~Claudine
Guest guest
We used to have a DAN like that too...I felt like I was coaxing him, prying him for more info because I was so desperate to learn. He seemed to agree with whatever I said and had several " suggestions " about things I " might " want to try. I wanted someone to tell me EXACTLY what to try, and if that didn't work, we could make changes..so forth and so on. Thats what we pay the big bucks for right? Anywho, my son is starting Nizoral next week at double the dosage that your son is currently on. Have you knocked out the bacteria? Is he on the GFCF/yeast free diet? If you are still giving sweets/lots of fruits, this may cancel some of the effectiveness out of the medication. I have heard that even though test results show some kids to be resistant to Diflucan, that it may work anyways, so I would probably give it a try if I were you. In fact, my son showed up as resistant to Diflucan as well, but if this Nizoral doesn't work, then I would like to give Diflucan a try. Just make sure and have him on a diet that doesn't overfeed the yeast you are trying to kill. You may check into adding another probiotic/antifungal as well. > > Okay, I have another dilemma here that I'd love some input on. My > son is on day 85 of Nizoral, Day 25 of Valtrex. Guest guest
50 mgs of Nizoral is *really* low, in my opinion.  When my son was on it he was taking 175 mgs (he's 32#'s).  Many DAN's just don't know the proper dosages and potentially end up making things worse.cherylOkay, I have another dilemma here that I'd love some input on. Guest guest
Our son is 5, 36 lbs and he's on 400 mg Ketoconozol (Nizoral) with his Valtrex. I'd consider a 2nd opinion. There are many on this board over the last few months who have shared their dosages. Perhaps that would support your discussion. We're OK with Diflucan but there is Sporonox with which we did not respond but many people use it. It is expensive -- we needed pre approval from our Ins. Co. Good luck. > > Okay, I have another dilemma here that I'd love some input on. My > son is on day 85 of Nizoral, Day 25 of Valtrex.
