Guest guest
" tnladyvol44 " Subject: Thyroid and EN? , I hope this doesn't sound like too stupid a question, but, I know that taking birth control pills, as it is a hormone, can cause EN. My question is this..........is it possible, do you think, that thyroid medication could be a possible cause? I have taken Synthroid for a few years now. Also, I was sent to a dermatologist for this diagnosis and he didn't do a biopsy, just told me I had a classic case of EN. Should I go to my regular dr and get some tests done? I have had a persistent cough for at least a couple months now and in the interim have also had what I thought was a sinus infection, which is not uncommon for me. But the cough is not going away. They did an x- ray for TB but it came back normal. I would appreciate any help or suggestions you or anyone in the EN group can give me. Thanks Danni ****** Dear Danni, To post to the entire EN Group in the future adress your emails to: erythema_nodosum_Group and I will get them too. Thyroid conditions and thyroid meds are not on our long list of triggers of EN, although many of us with EN do have thyroid conditions. Thyroid disorders are pretty common, especially among women. Usually a chest x-ray is done to also rule out sarcoidosis which is one of the related disorders to EN. I think there is a possability that the coughing might be due to strep infection and that is a very common cause of EN. A strep test can easily be done to rule that out. Some antibiotics actually can trigger EN, so maybe if you are on meds for sinus infection that could be the trigger. Aa you can see from this list: http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/c/cough/underly.htm There are many reasons for a cough, so I would think that if it is of long duration you might want to have a doctor test you for the more common reasons at least. I could also add testing for Alpha-1 a genetic [and easily treated] condition that can trigger EN and be misdiagnoseed as asthma. I hope this helps and that you feel better soon. The cough might actually be putting you on the trail for finding the underlying EN trigger. Once addressed the EN may subside. :-) Love,
Guest guest
Dear Sharon, Thanks for that reply. I didn't know about the mole like dots. Just because an x-ray rules out TB doesn't mean that it rules out sarc. Again, sarc. is the " great imposter " . Hope you and Tom had a nice Thanksgiving Day. Guest guest
, this is how I know I am having a flare up of the Sarcoidosis. Little red dots show up and they start changing size and color. We had a very good thanksgiving. I fixed mashed potatoes and green bean casserole, and Tom fixed the Turkey.
