Guest guest
Dear Sondra, I have seen in the past, and just recently last night when I give about 1 teaspoon of Benadryl it does calm her down and help her focus and attend better. I took her to a class last night that teaches young teens how to party dance and it was great seeing her try to watch the other kids and imitate the movements. However, you have to keep increasing the dosage to get the same effect and I worry about this antihistimine drying out her sinus cavity and causing nose bleeds. Do you or any one else on this list know of something like Benadryl that can help calm her severe verbal perseveration and help with her focus and attention? She is really having trouble at school. Thanks,
Guest guest
I to not be sure if you one of the moms here to be to be doing diet but will share from own personal things that once Dairy was to be out of my diet I was to be able to be more attentive to people and words around me than simply before. When on milk I to be to often be to drift off into deep thinkings and just staring out to the world much consumed by my inner play and not interest to tune in to the words or people as my mind to be racing in thinking which was to entertain me enough and did not need persons to be to stimulate my brain with words. Not I to be to share am not cured but my words to connect more and yes I to still be like this at times with the inattentive appearance, but my brain is more focused and able to respond in connected ways via typing and or less expressive in the verbal but can be to do it if something else in the environment does not take over and be of more interest and stimulating than interacting. My psychologist once to share it can be a real challenge to compete with people of AS and or HFA's inner play and he to be so right. To drug this behavior will extinguish some really profound thinking going on inside of the children's that they lack to express via words but it is there. So to me it is best to work on trying to find things in the real of life that are more intriguing to connect with than inner self. Make connecting more rewarding than not connecting so that the chances to connect will increase naturally. Sondra Sondra
Guest guest
Hi Sondra, I really appreciate your thoughts. has been on a casein free diet for several years and yes she definitely became more connected with the world. However, since hitting puberty 2 years ago, she has lost her academic skills and shows no interest in wanting to work. Her verbal peseveration really takes over and it is hard to get her to stop when she really needs to. I just wish I could find something that could calm her system down so she could benefit more from the world around her. Guest guest
So you really think this Benadryl is doing some good.........i am just wondering whether I should give it a try on Hannah.......when do you give it??? Hannah really does need something to get her to focus better.........and some nights she needs something to make her relax so she can sleep. Guest guest
I don't know, Cheryl....Benadryl is a pretty strong drug. I don't think it's something you'd want to give on a regular basis. If I remember, you like more naturopathic things. I only give my daughter Benadryl if she has a miserable cold and can't sleep. It knocks her right out. I just don't think it would be good to use it frequently. Too many drugs in it. Guest guest
Oh yes, Sondra, I didn't mean to say it's not good every once in awhile. For sure, there are times when it has been a big help for us. I just know people who give it to their kids all the time, just to knock them out. Not a good reason. But for times you describe, when things are just too overwhelming...I completely understand that. Guest guest
, this to be common even among typical teens they are so self consumed with fitting in that all else goes down hill so to speak. A child of autism may not be to have same reasons for to have everything suddenly go down hill , but much of the changes internally and such and watching peers be to do things that they are aware of is not things they can be to do . This is time of much observations and will share often with a regression comes a time of much social/developmental gains/ Sondra

Guest guest
Yep, I agree, was just wondering. I went to school with her today........and it is so hard for her to focus on simply instructions, once someone like myself sits and goes over it again with her, she seems to be ok, though slow with her writing etc, I guess she is never gonna keep up with the other kids, so I may as well accept it, and get on and teacher her as much as she can take in, guess we are all looking around the corner for some fandangled answer...lol cheryl S Re: Re: Benadryl-Sondra > > > Dear Sondra, > I have seen in the past, and just recently last night when I give > about 1 teaspoon of Benadryl it does calm her down and help her > focus and attend better. Guest guest
Her aide understands........and i think her regular teacher is just starting to understand, but he is of the " old school " getting close to retirement age and i think this autism thing is just blowing him away. I will just have to make time when i can and go and sit with her when the aide is somewhere else and try and get her on track a bit........i know i can see good and bad in this, but honestly what else can i do........i really do not think there is any way we can get more funding for more aide time....maybe this is why God made sure i wouldn;t get that extra work i was after, and now my casual has been cut right back after next week.......i was so furious when they told me but i can see why this is probably a good thing now. if we want out daughter to get through school learning anything.....and i mean the basics and that is all, it looks as though we are gonna have to make some time at least 3 days out of 5 and try and be there to help........just another step in the life of an autistic child, what else is around the corner............ .....?? lol cheryl s -- Re: Re: Benadryl-Sondra Cheryl, I am just dreading next year when Abby is done with PPI, She only has a couple of months left. Guest guest
Chery you do what you need to do. God will always lead you down the right path as long as you have faith in him. I am sure our girls will grow up to be beautiful women and have good lives. We will look back in 20 years and not even believe what we had to do to get them where they are, but at the same time we will think how worth it it all was. Our girls will hopefully get married someday, well Abby has to, she is to " high maintenace " for me to have for the rest of my life. LOL. I try not to think to far into the future as I only give myself chestpains and headaches when I do. That is easier said then done though. All I can say that has worked for me when I am overwhelmed is to pray and throw all my burdens on God. Cheryl we have talked before and I know you are a religious person, he will provide what you need to help your family. Guest guest
Cheryl it to sound like she to need 1 to 1 teaching to learn.
