WalMart Insurance Coverage for Transplants

Writing to ask people’s experience with WalMart coverage for

kidney transplants (policy written with BCBS of Illinois) and if you have

received the same information --

§

For a potential recipient -- benefits I was

quoted include not eligible for transplant services the 1st year

they are insured and that there is a $100,000 life time maximum for transplant

coverage (I think for any organ).

§

For a potential donor – their policy is

written such that they will only cover donor charges if the donor’s

insurance will not cover such and that they will need a letter of denial for

such donor eval & surgery from the donor’s insurance before they will

provide any coverage.

Looking forward to hearing from others – thanks!

I

was not told any restriction on kidney transplant services today – quote received

was for in-network benefits for Blue Cross PPO providers (in-network as long as

a Blue Cross PPO provider in your state).

During the 1st 2 years of coverage the patient has a limited transplant benefit of $100,000.00. After 2 years the transplant benefit becomes unlimited, however, the patient will have a $2,100.00 out of pocket unless they go to the Mayo Clinic.

I’ve had 3 patients transplanted so

far since I’ve worked here that have WalMart coverage. Yes the

benefits you quoted are what I was quoted only for first year employees, all 3

of my patients were more than 3 year employees. I was quoted $100,000 max per

transplant but she had told me it starts the day of admission for transplant

and didn’t include pre and post. Once the patient was transplanted, I

was very surprised that they paid over $100,000 for each transplant, one of

those transplants was a living donor transplant and was also covered no

problems. Hope this helps.

I have a liver patient that has Wal-Mart and I also told that the

first year, they have no transplant benefits. The 2nd year they have

a 100,000.00 max and the 3rd year, if they are not approved or

listed, they have to go to Mayo. Although, I was also told that if

they are approved or listed by the 3rd year, they no longer have a

transplant max.
