This business of hydroponics and indoor gardening is fascinating to me as well.

I'm doing container veggies outside right now -tomatoes, peppers, etc. and

started to wonder if they would produce indoors. Do they not need some sort of

pollination to produce veggies? I may need to look into aerogardens myself but

not sure if I have the room for the quantity of produce I'd like to have.

Still, it's worthwhile to investigate.

Hydroponics and other indoor gardening methods can SEEM expensive for the

initial outlay of things you need, but when you weigh that against the cost of

organic veggies, you come out ahead. My daughter and I are both vegetarian, and

I grow ALL of our food, year round. I garden outdoors during the season, but

grow most of the same stuff inside year round. It is pretty cool to harvest a

summer squash from your living room in the middle of winter! Aerogardens are a

great way to start, which will no doubt inspire you to want to explore other

options!

===========================================

After my Aerogarden success, I got totally enthused w/ thoughts of self

sufficiency and fresh herbs and produce growing at home and dove head first into

hydroponics. I ordered an aeroponic/ bubbleponic unit online, and then got

inpatient and built one myself before the other arrived. Very easy to do and I

have them growing lettuce (transplanted from organic non hybrid heirloom seeds I

cultivated at first in the Aerogarden), kale, arugula, collard greens, spinach,

and a strawberry plant. I'll post pics of the setup on the Sproutpeople yahoo

group site. It's been a lot of fun, and it's nice to know I grew them all on my

own-at least the lettuce, and I know their organic non gmo, and what I've been

feeding them. If only I had a spare room/basement-I'd have a hydroponic farm up

and running in no time!

There are SO many hydroponic systems up on youtube, I'm having a ball. All

various kinds of things growing on the windows. Some use water pumps, some use

air pumps, and I just saw a video on SuperCube and it is a BIG cabinet and when

open it up, there is a hydroponic system inside the cabinet (with lights and

everything), and it grows EVERYTHING.

Holy cow.

Alan will really think I'm nuts now. I'm going to play a prank on him.

I'm going to show him the video that I posted on this thread (where the girl

lives in Brooklyn, and then she explains and shows all the beautiful plants

growing from the top of her window.

I'm going to tell Alan " We are going to do this " .

I CAN'T WAIT TO PICK HIM UP OFF THE FLOOR!!!!

lol lol lol

Many things need to be hand pollinated.  I accomplish this with inexpensive

paintbrushes that I keep near each plant.  I just give them a " paint " when I

walk past them.  As for space, my house is TINY, yet I have managed to

incorporate my various gardens without them taking over (although they certainly

are obvious and virtually everywhere.  I try to maximize space at every turn.

I have an entertainment center in my living room with a bunch of small shelves

on it, and each shelf has a garden, aerogarden, pot, or hydroponic unit.  I

also have " wall farms " for the aerogardens.  I am, in fact, hanging a new wall

farm tonight-just waiting for our nasty weather (tornado watch) to pass before I

plug in the power tools, lol.
