Re: EN and AIDS

Dear M,

Although I've had EN possibly the longest of anyone in the Group, I

have a mild case and go into remission wihout drugs, so life hasn't

been that bad :-)

You are right that some people who are HIV+ never come down with full

blown AIDS. I don't know if there is any connection between the way

AIDS and EN behave, but one thing is for sure: If the time, money and

research devoted to AIDS went into EN, there would be some awsome

meds by now and a whole lot more understanding of EN. AIDS is caused

by the HIV virus, and we know EN is caused by many different things,

some as yet unidentified. I have read that one side effect of having

AIDS is EN--but that could be due to the meds needed.

I've met many people who are HIV+. However they are on meds and are

healthy. Not only healthy--they are robust and their muscles have

muscles! I've also met a doctor with AIDS who was frail and looked

like he was headed for the last roundup. Once full blown AIDS kicks

in, it is harder to regain health. I think perhaps the longer one has

had unrelenting EN, the more difficult a remission is to achieve. But

with the right treatments, I still feel EN could become a footnote in

a medical textbook.

Love,

Thanks, =)

The only correlation I was making between AIDS and EN was they're

both autoimmune . . . and there's no cure for either. By 'this', I

meant EN, not AIDS.

I must have written too early in the morning =) What makes sense to

me when I'm half awake, most likely makes no sense to others. lol.

Sorry about that =)

Is it time to put the presents under the tree yet?? Hub and I are up

to our elbows in deviled eggs, mashed potatoes, and broccoli bake for

the dinner tomorrow. Bring on the pillow!!

Merry Christmas, everyone!! May you all have a restful, peaceful

evening!

Dear M,

That's ok.

Actually I am not sure that AIDS [Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome]

is an autoimmune disease. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. This

virus attacks the immune system, not the body attacking itself, to my

understanding.

However, you might be ahead of me as I did a search and found some

talk on an AIDS forum where they were discussing if AIDS was in fact

another AI disorder brought about by the HIV virus. Here is what one

poster said:

" Although there is some evidence that HIV disease is, IN PART,

autoimmune in its nature, some of what was cited, in the abstract,

makes mountains out of mole hills. For example, one of the abstracts

suggests that because T 8 cells kill infected T 4 cells HIV is,

therefore, an autoimmune disease. I'm not so sure. I believe that T 8

cells have, as one of their responsibilities, the encirclement and

destruction of diseased or infected T 4 cells. Of course, if a T 8

cell kills a non infected t 4 cell, that behavior would be autoimmune.

But if the T 8 cells devours an infected T 4 cell, I don't think that

behavior can be considered autoimmune. Also, the autoimmune nature of

HIV manifests itself in many other ways. For example, in some cases of

HIV myopathy one can find, on musle biopsy, lymphocytic infiltration

of the myofibers, indicative of white blood cells besieging muscle

tissue. Also, some people believe that HIV dementia is caused not by

HIV's destruction of neurons but by a " cascade " of responses, to HIV,

which results in neurons committing suicide in the brain (Cellular

apoptosis) "

I don't know if any of our members have AIDS, but if they do, they

might be able to explain this. I know that EN is more prevalent in

those with AIDS, but I don't know why. Maybe all he AIDS research will

help discover a treatmant for EN. :-)

Wishing you and Everyone a Very Special Christmas.
