Guest guest
Good morning I was just diagnosed with Hepatitis c genotype 5a. I got no idea what it means the doctor told me to read up about it but did not tell me much. He said I should get some treatment that would take around 48 weeks and it might help or it might not help…not very promising especially when you not sure what is going on. My son think it is a bunch of rubbish and that it is not serious at all according to his in-laws am just looking for attention – I am really so sorry I told him about it but the doctor told me to tell my kids if I knew it would be his reaction I would not have told him at all. I already got mood swings and Muscle, joint, and body aches which are supposed to be side effects of the treatment thus it is going to be worst it sound like. I had a blood transfusion in the 70's when I had my son and my daughter and the doctor think it is where I got the virus from… Please help what exactly does it mean all the documents on the internet just confuse me more. Guest guest
I myself have Hep C Genotype 1A. I find 5A interesting (only because I haven't heard of 5A) but I feel the doctor is correct. Especially since you had a blood transfusion in the 70's. Hep C is a silent killer and when I say silent it doesn't mean you will die tomorrow. The problem with Hep C is we don't know we have it for it causes no signs until we have some damage. I got my Hep C in the 80's and am on treatment for the third time. I had epilepsy surgery in 93 and that is the only way I found out I had Hep C. The positive thing for you is a new medicine called incivek (came out in 2011) has really looked positive for many patients including myself. I had my doctor appointment today and he said only one of his patients didn't rid the virus with the incivek (yet he came up undetectable at the beginning of treatment). There is incivek, Pegasys and Ribavirin that many people are on or have been and I myself started in January 25, 2012 and will finish on December 24, 2012, 48 weeks for me also. Please keep us updated on what the doctor decides and we can assist you from there. There is no sense in anyone getting mad for it is here and nothing can be changed. Let your son know his anger is only hurting you and himself. It's one of those things we have to accept. Life is a lot harder with many other illnesses and all of us as human beings should really appreciate each day we have for tomorrow may never come. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.Sincerely,Sheila Good morning I was just diagnosed with Hepatitis c genotype 5a. Dr. Melisa Parmer has written an excellent book. You might want to bookmark my websight and follow some of the links as you have time. The VA has a pdf file with lots of information. I found all these sights to learn about what my brother had. He received a blood or blood products back in 1977 during his Leukema treatment. He died around 2.5 years ago. The sooner you find out about it, the better off you are. Treatment plans keep getting better! Depending on how bad you are, you might be able to apply for social security disability. I know my brother got it. You can also qualify for Medicare. There is around a 18 month waiting period (unless ObamaCare did away with that). -- Bill Eastman www.ke5asu.com/links.html

Good morningI was just diagnosed with Hepatitis c genotype 5a. Guest guest
Thank you very much everyone for your reply, Hepatitis C genotype 5a is the predominant genotype in South Africa. Only 600 people were diagnosed with it since 2003 (HCV genotype 5a infections are scarce). I live Cape Town, South Africa; we got no social security and I cannot afford getting insurance since I live in the states the pass 10 years because they penalize me for not having any medical insurance in SA for five years prior. If I try to get insurance it will cost me 50% what anyone else pay, which I though at the time was not worth it. I got a hospital plan which will pay when I need hospitalization but earn too much to qualify for help from the government hospitals around here. I went to my doctor today and they explain that they can treat me with Pegasys and Ribavirin for 48 weeks; then they will then decide whether I need some more treatment. I need to decide whether I want the treatment and then pay for it out of pocket around $2,500(two thousand five hundred dollars) per month much less than what it would cost in the states am sure but still a lot of money for someone in a third world country. I will pray about it and then take it from there. It seems they cannot guarantee anything, not whether you will get cure, according to the doctors treatment responses for HCV genotype 5a are dependent on how regular you take your medication and if you eat a healthy diet. Guest guest
Too bad they don't have the protease inhibitors in South Africa, because they are working miracles here in the US. Good luck to you.
