Re:

Donor Post-TransplantComplications Medicare Coverage

We have a Gatekeeper,

i.e. our Urologist. He makes the determination if the complication is related

to the transplant. He then dictates a letter that is sent to us that states the

complication is related to his donation.

This letter is sent with the UB92 form and it is sent in hard copy. The appropriate

diagnosis codes must be placed on the claim and the claim is filed. If you

would like a copy faxed to you, let me know. I would be happy to send you what

we use.

The donor will retain this coverage until he is deemed " recovered "

this could be years on a month. The verbiage is not specific as to how long

they retain coverage, it just says " recovered " . Bev

Hypothetical questions -

If a donor has post-transplant related medical complications (when

medically documented as such), how does the Medicare coverage work for

him/her? (The transplant was a Medicare covered transplant.)

* If the recipient only signed up for Medicare A as has group

health insurance, will Medicare only cover hospital charges for such a

donor?

* If the recipient no longer has Medicare (is more than 3

years after transplant), will Medicare still cover donor charges for

transplant related complications?

Thanks for the help!
