Guest guest
Colonoscopies are not done as treatment procedures; they are inherently diagnostic. It is a “scope”, which means you are just looking. If you take a biopsy while in there, then you code it differently & the biopsy is a separate billable procedure. Colonoscopies vary depending on whether the diagnostic is routine/ screening, or diagnostic subsequent to sxs. You don’t go in to clip polyps, polyps on their own are not generally a problem, it is what they would become if left there for years. Guest guest
Hi Marcia, We stopped covering caths for that reason, we were having too many that had to be stented and it is too difficult to break out all the charges; the colonoscopy’s are done prior to their evaluation, we only cover the ones if the patient cannot afford the copay and so far we haven’t had any snipping. Thank you. >>> " Vaughan " <VaughanHSC-CLC (DOT) Com <mailto:Vaughan%40HSC-CLC.Com> > 9/10/2007 3:40 PM >>> Hi, Please remember, it is very, very important to communicate closely with the patients and where not Medicare, the payer for the patient. The patient needs to sign something that says that they realize that if care is given (such as a polyp is snipped) that the patient and their payer is going to be billed, if no care is given then the patient and payer will not get billed (kidney only). For non kidney, non Medicare, you can do the service and bill based on contract. However in any case, any hospital service must be logged for inclusion on the cost report regardless of payer. You also may need to get preauths and get the doc's to do the same just in case.
