I finally clicked the right link... this was a bad day for thyroid drugs.

What, exactly, are patients who need these replacement drugs supposed to be

doing? Are they notified by their pharmacies that they got a bad batch?

Are we really supposed to monitor the FDA every single day????

This is sooooooooooooo frustrating.

I called my pharmacy about the Cytomel and they don’t have those

lot numbers. I overlooked the Armour, so I didn’t ask about that one. I guess

it doesn’t matter since I’m not taking that one anymore.

In Texas, the pharmacies are not required to put lot numbers on your prescriptions or otherwise keep track of them. . . . .so they don't bother.

The only time I have ever seen a lot number has been when I have ordered a factory sealed bottle of 100, as I do when I get my Lannett levothyroxine outside of my drug plan.

I am not giving up on Armour, even if at some point I need to temporarily switch to NT or a compound.

We think that Forest is jumping through hoops for the FDA in order to keep Armour on the market. TimeCap Labs has had their thyroid operation shut down by the FDA, because they did not want to do what was necessary to bring their product up to code.

Who is TimeCap Labs? What do they make?

That is absolutely disgusting to me that the pharmacies aren’t

required to track which lot numbers your scripts came from. So in the case of

a recall, there can’t be any claims. How convenient. I know in my case my

pharmacist checked and said he didn’t have that lot number, but who knows if he

was just looking at the bottle on the shelf right now or checking a list or

what.

As someone else asked…how do we know what the problems actually

are?

TimeCap labs made one of the so-called generics for Armour. (There is no legal generic for Armour.)

CVS and Caremark put it on the printout but not on the label. That is

insane that they aren't required to track them. So people go around taking

bad pills and never know it. How many people have been harmed because

drugs are recalled and they don't know about it?! Insane!!!!!

That is just the NDC number, not the lot number. The NDC number stays the same from lot to lot. It denotes the drug, the dose and the format or packaging originally sent to the pharmacy. Caremark probably gets the 50,000 pill drums.

I just checked the prescribing information and compared it to my Caremark printout. It is the NDC number for the bottles of 100, not the drums of 50,000. Forest is no longer making any intermediate container sizes.

Caremark does not even keep a record of lot numbers. I found that out when I had a problem with another drug.

Actually, they do track them. You have to look at the lot number too (it's at the end of the section, like a footnote). CVS (and other pharmacies, I suspect) do not put the lot numbers on the prescription, but they can check if you call and ask. I called (on account of your post, I knew where to look for the number--thank you) because my NDC number matched up, and I learned that the lot number is different.

The reason for the recall on the thyroid drugs in the list is Not in conformance with cGMPs.

You can read more about what that means, here:

So what do we do when there is a recall. This is so confusing. Do they

replace our pills?

Sorry my brain fog is preventing me from getting words out.

So what do we do when there is a recall. This is so confusing. Do they

replace our pills?

Sorry my brain fog is preventing me from getting words out.

I would contact Forest and also your pharmacy. I do not know what they will do for you. They might replace your pills or give you a refund. (lotta good that will do!)

And have you figured out that the FDA does not care about what patients may need? The FDA is the lackey of BigPharm. . . .and probably not even the friend of SmallerPharm. . . . .

I think I'm about to contact my doctor and switch to Nature Thyroid. Jan,

why did they change the binder? Was it a cost issue, supply issue or did

they have research that it would be a better product?

My husband and I got into a big argument about how Pharmacies should have

to keep the information about the lot number and post recalls. He said

that only a small amount of the population (those of us that are already

smart and stay informed ) would benefit from it. He said the average

person when asked probably can't remember the name of the drug(s) because

like sheep they just go ask for that purple pill that they saw on TV. And

the stupid doctors just give it to them. While I agree with some of that,

I still think they should have to keep that information, post recalls on

their website and in there store, and take back and replace recalled

items. The drug company should then be required to replace that to them or

refund it.

In your argument, you are both right.

Companies should fully disclose in an

accessible manner, and it’s true that many people are like sheep and have

no idea about their bodies or their pills.

My oldest daughter is doing her final

rotations in PA school and is currently in the ER. Every day she has

stories of people who are barely functioning in this life. She says about

a third of the patients there are extremely simple and easily confused, and

that she spends quite a lot of the time of an appt reassuring them or doing

very basic explanations so as to quell their fears that they are going to die

(of something as basic as poison ivy).

One story was of a young couple who showed

up, the woman with severe lower abdominal pain. The bf was in agony for

her. They drew blood and were prepping to do some other exams. The

bf got my daughter’s attention, signaled her over to a corner to talk to

her. He was scared and confused and needed some clarity. He said,

slowly, ”We came in here because my girlfriend’s stomach is hurting

her so bad. It’s not her blood that is hurting her, it’s her

stomach.” He did not understand why they had taken her blood and

how that would help with understanding her stomach pain. My daughter was

glad to explain it to him simply so he could relax.

Since I take Armour (60 mg), I asked

Womens International Pharmacy about this; the reply was:

Thank you for the heads up on the recall for Armour Thyroid

for July 22. The recall was initiated by Advantage Dose LLC who

repackages medications into single dose packaging for nursing homes and

hospitals. The FDA disagreed with the repackager’s choice of

expiration dating. This was not a recall because of the quality of the

product. We do not buy single dose repackaging so we were not included on

the recall notice from Advantage Dose LLC.
