Guest guest
Just wondering of all of you who have your official diagnosis what the social worker meeting with the parents entails. In filling out our paperwork, they sent a breakdown of the itinerary for the meetings. They have scheduled 2 hours with the social worker for my husband and myself while our 4 year old is getting other evaluations. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks,
Guest guest
Ours took about a year of longggggg appointments. We had a doctor who specializes in Autism, not a social worker. Anyways the meetings with my husband and I were to see where each of us stood. If we saw things the same. We had to fill out questionnaires and answer a ton of questions. They often ask you separate from your spouse. When they tested our daughter it involved a bunch of tests from medical books. I can't remember off the top of my head the names of the books but they were initials and roman numerals (I know that is not helpful). I want to say one of them was a DVM but I think that is the Vet. I am trying to multitask this morning........ The testing isn't anything to worry about. Guest guest
I think everyone's experience is different depending on where we take our children. Our diagnosis was done by a psychiatrist and never involved a social worker. I would say give them a call and ask them to explain the process if you have questions. Guest guest
We went to a paediatrician with my son on the school's advice, who had the actual testing done by a psychologist. That involved 2 1hr meetings with my son, during which she did an IQ test and quite a long survey of various traits to see if he had Aspergers and/or ADHD, and both parents plus one teacher filling in a long questionnaire on a lot of aspects of his life. For my daughter, all we did was see a paediatircian who said it wasn't worth the time, effort and expense (about $800) to do all that, as she had basically worked out how to cope, was coping well, and didn't need medication. She is apparently a classic case of the girl Aspie, so there was no real need for a formal process of diagnosis. Apart from talking to her parents more, meeting with the school counsellor regularly, and regular (3-6 month apart) meetings with her paediatrician, she needs nothing else. I think it really depends on where you live, and what your child is like, what the process will be.  Just wondering of all of you who have your official diagnosis what the social worker meeting with the parents entails. Guest guest
Here is what I know is that the diagnosis has to come from someone with a MD or DO after their name. With the exception of the little going through this now it has never been a problem. My daughter because she appeared not to have any special needs when little they did tons of medical test to rule out different things including a brain tumor. With my niece and nephew they did tons of testing too they also had many other medical issues. With my nephew from my younger sister all his doctor had to do is see him once during a meltdown as he already heard about the melt down at the dentist. But my sister was really lucky because the ped she was taking her boys to also had a big interest in ADHD/ADD and Autism. With hard work from his parents and doctor he never was officially diagnosed with Aspergers and did well which was the right thing for him, and the approach they took would not work for most kids. This child has grown up and joined the Air Force National Guard and finished up his 6 years. His only regret was he did not join the regular Air Force. He said that having someone tell you when to do everything from getting up and going to bed made things so much easier for him. He did very well and the only reason he did not re-enlist was because of a gray issue. the world has only black and white so there is no room for gray. His higher ups did not do something by the book, which was not giving him the required notice to report for work until he was 2 hours late. They needed him to work a whole week which he loved and wanted to do but was told he was not needed then 2 hours after the shift started he got yelled at for being late. Wrong week to do that because it was a week later that was to get out or re-enlist. Had they just admitted it was a mistake and he still be in. He knew they made the mistake because if you go so far from the base you have to have permission and he had permission to go home. Live in one place when he joined the move half a state a way to go to university. Anyways my great nephew the little one has been diagnosed by the school when two different kindergarten teacher refused to have in their classes. Now they need the official medical diagnosis to get other services.Judy To: autism-aspergers From: alexandriairma@...Date: Fri, 4 May 2012 06:53:59 -0700Subject: Re: Getting our official diagnosis Ours took about a year of longggggg appointments. Guest guest
The DSM-IV is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It is the diagnostic criteria for all mental disorders. Autism and Asperger's are both in there. You have to meet the criteria in order to get the diagnosis. Autism is usually diagnosed by a psychologist or developmental pediatrician. We've never had a social worker either. I've heard of different agencies using case workers to help parents through the process. Either way, it usually involves filling out a ton of questionnaires and then the child spends some one on one with the provider. It's not any big deal and it wasn't difficult on my daughter. She always enjoyed testing. Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you; Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul; the other for your freedom. -- Getting our official diagnosis Just wondering of all of you who have your official diagnosis what the social worker meeting with the parents entails. Guest guest
I don't have any insight but we have that same meeting this Tuesday with a social worker. The social worker said out of the 2 hrs most of it will be with me. I don't understand why we can't do that part on the phone and then have a short meeting in persn with my son. Email me if you want me to tell you how it goes. Its nice to know someone is going thru the same thing as me > > To: autism-aspergers > Sent: Friday, May 4, 2012 8:25 AM > Subject: Getting our official diagnosis > > > > > Just wondering of all of you who have your official diagnosis what the > social worker meeting with the parents entails.
