Guest guest
,Currently my platelets are at 65 and for me that's "normal"... Got down to 21 on treatment. I haven't had a biopsy (I don't want to have one...no real reason) but in 1991 I was stage 2 fibrosis. My doc seems to believe I have cirrhosis because my platelets are so chronically low. I've had 6 surgeries (joint replacement stuff) with my platelets being around 70 with no issues really. I do tend to bruise very easily but that's all...dic said that my platelets are in my spleen and that they would come out if necessary if that makes any sense. I've seen a hematologist many times and I'm told that there is no other condition that I have that my platelets low. I do have an enlarged spleen and portal hypertension so I just figure that's why I'm so low. I hope this helps!BarbSent from my iPod Unfortunately I have no insurance. I have to see Dr's thru Lake County (IL) Health Dept--after seeing many overwelmed temp docs, finally found one who set me up w case mgr to treat my advanced Hep C. But CBC showed platelets only 37 (normal:140-200/thousand), so also referred to case mgr for a hemotologist. Over last 19 yrs have been under treatment for HepC 3x, only able to handle 3-3 1/2 mths of 6 mth protocal due to dangerous abnormalities in labs--1 of those being low platelets (but never even close to 37). Last treatment was 6 yrs ago, quantitative real time PCR currently 29,216. Has anyone had a chronic loss of platelets like this? Until I am contacted by my case mgrs and get my referrals, I'm just sitting/sleeping and watching for a bleed (as I was warned to do). Any info would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks group! Guest guest
Hi , During my first treatment in 09 my platelets dropped to about 25 and they gave me platelets a few times. Since then they run anywhere from 40-65. I bleed just a little from my nose and teeth. A good blood doctor can get anyone thru treatment. I believe that is the key. I start treatment again with the Merek drug in 19 days. (but who is counting)! Good luck Unfortunately I have no insurance. Guest guest
I was given platelets prior to my 1st surgery ... Well, they actually went DOWN! Figure THAT one out! Platelets are not for achieving a lasting result but rather a short remedy for another long term problem...like when I was on treatment nearly a year ago my labs were so bad that I needed 10 transfusions due to low hemoglobin (it hovered around 7-8 ( 1/2 of what it should be!) during the entire 63 weeks of treatment. I took procrit shots as well as neupogen shots every few days, along with the IFN shots and RIBA pills.I've had no bleeding in my mouth nor have I anywhere else. And it's just not something i even think about until I run into a wall or something and get this ridiculously huge bruise and most of the time I dont even know-how they got thereSent from my iPod Hi , During my first treatment in 09 my platelets dropped to about 25 and they gave me platelets a few times. Treatment will probably be starting again (4th attempt) if get the funds thru county health dept. I know it'll suck, but better than just sitting here scared to death and accomplishing nothing.
