Hi,

 CBT is Cognitive Behavioral therapy.

I understand how you feel! Just remember that this is NOT your fault.OCD can

cause your child and you so much turmoil. It can consume your entire day if you

let it. Try to explain to her that it is like when she has hiccups and she wants

to stop but can't. Let her know that her brain is " hiccupping " My son was

diagnosed at age 4 and my daughter at age 5, and it is very challenging because

they don't know what is going on.Try and ask her if she WANTS to do the ritual

she is doing. If she says , " NO " than try to label the OCD, like with my son we

just called it the " OCD monster " and tell her to boss him back away from her

brain. This takes a lot of time and patience.Your child's psychiatrist can

hopefully refer you to a good therapist that specializes in CBT. Medication can

help as an aid if you choose to go that route.

As you go , you'll learn not to give in to her rituals. Let her tantrum , the

more you do what she asks the more she will request of you, and this is not her

fault, but you'll be helping her in the long run.

Keep us posted!

Hugs

Thank you for your response Judy!

I have been going back and forth on it and one minute I feel like I

am a bad parent and not strict enough and that is why she is acting

this way and then other times I am convinced she really has no

control over it and I feel horrible that I have been too hard on

her. I am a single parent and find this really hard to deal with.

What is CBT?
