Guest guest
I'm new to sprouting and wheatgrass. I have 20x10 " trays with holes in them and a drip pan underneath. I've done a few batches that seemed to work out OK. This morning (unfortunately AFTER I cut and juiced my wheatgrass--hope I'm not going to get sick..) I noticed a really bad smell from the soil and drip pan. My questions are: 1) Is it OK to juice this grass? I could cut it and store it in the refrigerator. 2) Am I going to get sick from juicing this grass this morning??? 3) Why did this happen? How can I prevent it? Thanks in advance for your help. Guest guest
I'm new to wheatgrass also, but I'm thinking that the roots stayed too wet and have started to rot. As long as there isn't any mold on the grass itself, I wouldn't think that there'd be anything wrong with using it. I have only used Baby Blanket so far but am going to try soil for sunflowers, but I do notice that the roots feel a little " slimy " when I take the whole mass out to cut the grass. I think it's a fine line from " just right " to " too much " water and you might have crossed over this time. Is it more humid lately where you are? Was there water standing in the drip tray? I'd juice a little bit, taste it and see - especially if the grass itself doesn't seem any different looking, feeling or smelling. I probably would not use that tray of soil to attempt a second cutting though (which I don't think I'm going to try anyway). As for the future, I'd just be really sure that you don't over-water and that the top tray isn't standing in water. Good air circulation is needed and it's hard once the grass gets tall and lush. Maybe instead of actually watering, just mist the grass once it gets 3-4 inches tall? Someone with more experience should jump in here and let me know if I am " all wet " on this. ;-) > > I'm new to sprouting and wheatgrass. Guest guest
I would suspect the soil. What type are you using? Perhaps the smell is from fertilizer in the soil. I plant w/ a Peat /perlite mix -free of any potentially hazardous organic matter in it such as manure and the like. I water with a mix of filtered water and Ocean Solution or kelp for nutrients. As far as consuming the grass juice, I generally follow the when in doubt-throw it out line when dealing w/ consumables. Wheatgrass soil smells like a sewer--help ;-) I'm new to sprouting and wheatgrass. I have 20x10 " trays with holes in them and a drip pan underneath. Guest guest
Thanks for your replies. I'm using organic soil and kelp as fertilizer. Think I may have overwatered it. It's hard to know how much water I should be using. Any suggestions for a 10x20 " tray? > > I'm new to sprouting and wheatgrass. I have 20x10 " trays with holes in them and a drip pan underneath.
