Guest guest
Hi, I know how overwhelming everything can be...my son was diagnosed right at age 2, but I knew a few months before that something was not right, and suspected it may be Autism. I researched developmental pediatricians, and I wanted one that was DAN approved, but they all had long waiting lists and were so expensive and wanted the money upfront, and I wanted to get started right away. I took my son to a psychologist in Woodstock who specializes in Autism and PDD-NOS and does evaluations. They were very helpful and met with us and did an evaluation. They gave us the diagnosis of mild autism. We did not have to wait months for an appointment. Once I got the diagnosis, I did ALOT of research and was VERY interested in the biomed approach. It made sense to me that the gut affects the brain, and any imbalance in the body can affect speech/behavior, etc. I found a Naturopath Dr, in Cumming, GA that is DAN approved and does all of the biomed testing. I made an appointment and met with him. He put my son on supplements right away based on meeting with him and speeking to us about my son's issues and we have seen HUGE improvements!!! They did a urine test on my son and found that he has high levels of yeast and other imbalances, and we are now getting that under control as well. My son is like a completely different child...he is on the GFCF and soy free diet, and that has also been HUGE...he has been less crabby and has had less gas making for a much happier child. We are starting ABA therapy next month, and I am excited to see all of the progress he will make with that. It is expensive, but totally worth it. The naturopath is not covered by insurance, and we have spent about $700 so far on that and have seen wonderful results with the supplements and diet. I know in time, it will only get better :-) I hope this helps lead you in the right path...it is all very confusing, but I chose this path for my son, and so far, I am very happy with the outcome. Good Luck!!! e To: autism-georgia Sent: Wednesday, January 7, 2009 10:25:39 AMSubject: Out of denial of Autism diagnosis. Now feeling OVERWHELMED, frustrated & drained Hello,My daughter Gabby(2yrs old will be three next month) was diagnosed with Autism about a year ago by a child psychologist. 1.She at that time spoke only about 4 words ( but could sing most nursery rhythms backwards and forwards). 2. She was a pretty good sleeper. going down about 9 and sleeping until 7 and with out a struggle. 3. She had began tantrums with VERY high pit Screams.4. She ate most every thing put in front of her.5. Frequent escape attempts from her daycare classroom-DailyAll of these things I thought was pretty typical and nervously snickered at the Autism diagnosis. However...one year later...1. She has speech 2 x weekly and uses about 30 words, but will give the therapist temper tantrums most sessions. A ABA therapist 1 weekly.2. She goes to bed at 11pm-1am (struggling the whole time) and wakes up at 5am-7am. When she wakes up, she will not verbalize any wants...just screams...3. She is constantly spinning something (mostly cords). when I take them away to prevent her from hitting her sisters. She throws tantrums until she finds another cord in the house to spin.I find myself not going anywhere because I know her high pit screams and tantrums will always happen. (I realize that this may sounds silly but, I really get tired of all the rude comments we get when shes doing this)We tried the gluten and casein free diets and frankly didn't notice a difference. However, once we removed dairy from her diet (due to the constant diarrhea, She became less "spacey".I would like to explore more with diets/nutrition but I want to do this safely (when I see all the post about all the different supplements, I want theses results for Gabby but it's scary and overwhelming, I don't know where to start. By the way, Her current pediatrician gave me the whole "autism is over diagnosed" spill and really will not cooperate with my request to find out more with testing. Our family is going through a extremely difficult financial time right now. We have two other two other children (1 year and 4 years) But we realize that Gabby needs help. Can any one tell us where to start to get help. Where to start. Guest guest
For those of you doing GFCF: before you started the diet, did your kids have GI symptoms (i.e. gas, diarrhea, constipation, etc...)? or did you start it based solely on the autistic behaviors? Our two 4 yo girls were diagnosed in July and we have done some research and thinking about bio med treatments, but i can't get past the fact that they don't have any digestive problems...they have very regular bowel routines/ stools, etc... Is it worth the time / effort / expense / stress to try GFCF anyway? Thanks for your input! I totally relate to the overwhelmed feeling and difficulty knowing where to start! Guest guest
We started our daughter on GF/CF based on behavior. She had normal bowel habits before going GF/CF and after, too. Oddly enough, when we found a DAN! and had some testing done, we found out she had high yeast levels (which would mean we should have seen diarrhea) and a staph infection (which would mean we should have seen constipation). We had thought nothing was wrong with her bowel habits. All along, the fungal infection and the staph infection worked together to make us thing everything was normal. The diet is worth a try but do casein first. Within three days off casein, we noticed increased language. You should try soy-free, too, since the protein in soy tends to mimic casein. After a year off gluten, we still had not seen any success so, we relaxed the gluten-free diet - but our daughter is still very much casein free and soy free.- Rhonda From: e e <kristine_erice@ yahoo.com>Subject: Re: Out of denial of Autism diagnosis. Now feeling OVERWHELMED, frustrated & drainedTo: autism-georgia@ yahoogroups. comDate: Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 1:58 PM Hi, I know how overwhelming everything can be...my son was diagnosed right at age 2, but I knew a few months before that something was not right, and suspected it may be Autism. Guest guest
We started the CF part of the diet for my daughter (she had chronic constipation) before we got the diagnosis. Shortly after we ordered a peptide test from Great Plains Lab and we discovered Glueten was not a problem for our daughter so we did not have to do the GF part of the diet. I suggest doing the tests first that way you know what you are dealing with. It's been several years ago when we did the peptide testing, but at that time I believe we paid about $100 for the test. Guest guest
We have to wait until January 23 to hopefully get a diagnosis for our son - but I was wondering if chronic constipation is a symptom of autism? And can anyone explain - my son who is 19 months - will at random parts of the day and night - shake his hands - is that a symptom also? Guest guest
Hi ! I just wanted to say that everything will be ok. Even if your child is diagnosed with Autism on the 23rd, you and the family will be just fine! It can be difficult learning about the condition and what will and what will not work with your son. I really like the book called, Thinking In Pictures, by Temple Grandin. If you would like the book let me know I will send it to you. It is about an older woman who has lived with Autism her whole life. It really helped me understand how she thinks (which helped me understand how my daughter thinks!). She really does a great job with the book. I remember feeling overwhelmed and frustrated many times. Please feel free to vent any time! I am not sure but maybe your son is expressing some "flapping" when he is shaking his hands. You can google Autism and flapping and it may explain things better for you. Do tons of research! It really has helped me with my daughter. All the research, talking to other parents, and trying different things. If something doesn't work don't give up just keep trying other things. If something works stick with it! Best wishes, Jeanette Subject: Re: Re: Out of denial of Autism diagnosis. Now feeling OVERWHELMED, frustrated & drainedTo: autism-georgia Date: Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 3:03 PM We have to wait until January 23 to hopefully get a diagnosis for our son - but I was wondering if chronic constipation is a symptom of autism? Guest guest
the others have given great advice already but i wanted you to know that there is a TACA chapter in GA now that meets monthly in cumming http://meetup.tacanow.org/georgia/index.html there is also a yahoo group of locals (AutimsBiomedGA) and we meet monthly for too at chilis in alpharetta. kinda a moms night out but dads welcome too. the next one is monday, jan 12th at 8pm. below is more details on the dinner group meetings from the mom who arranges them. **************** Hi Everyone - Happy New Year! I hope all of you had a very festive holiday. After a month off for December, we are ready to get back into the monthly biomed meetings. The next meeting will be on Monday, January 12th at 8pm. Same place, Chili's Restaurant across from Norhtpoint Mall (on Northpoint Pkwy). Can't wait to catch up, and newcomers are always welcome! :-) Hope to see you there! :-) Hugs - :-) The North Fulton Biomed Group was started two years ago by , the mother of a 3yr old autisic son Ben. She decided to start her own support group in the hopes of recovering her own son from autism, to help others find recovery for their own kids, and provide support along the difficult journey. The group meets once a month at the Chili's Restaurant in Alpharetta (across from Northpoint Mall) at 8pm, and the meetings are announced on both the NFASG and AutismBiomedGA yahoo groups. It is a time for sharing experiences with recent therapies, supplements, and new doctors. It is also a time for providing support and hope for the moms who are struggling, as well as sharing the joy in those kids that have made huge strides recently. We will have anywhere from 4-20+ parents attend each month, and newcomers are always welcome. No biomed experience is necessary, and we frequently have parents with a recent diagnosis come to get info on doctors, therapists, tests, dietary interventions, pediatricians, vaccine info, recipes, etc. It is a very informal meeting, and everyone usually orders food and just talks. Some parents bring recent labs, and compare with others. Parents will be discussing various interventions such as chelation, HBOT, MB12 shots, Valtrex/Diflucan, Yasko Protocol, sequential/classical homeopathy, listening therapy, infrared saunas, etc. > > Hello, > My daughter Gabby(2yrs old will be three next month) was diagnosed > with Autism about a year ago by a child psychologist. > 1.She at that time spoke only about 4 words ( but could sing most > nursery rhythms backwards and forwards). > 2. Guest guest
Many of you have asked questions about biomedical/diet. Just fyi, our next TACA meeting (Feb. 21) will be about biomedical treatments and autism. Hank Sloan is a Naturopath that has been through the DAN training and is successfully treating many children with autism. His practice is in Cumming, GA and his website is: www.thegenesiscenter.com . As soon as I get more meeting details regarding the presentation I will post it. For details on upcoming TACA meetings go to www.tacanow.org/georgia. Also, our website offers a lot of helpful biomedical information, especially for those wanting to start the diet. Books that I have found helpful when beginning biomedical are: The TACA guide (parents get free at our monthly meeting) Unraveling the Mystery of Autism by Seroussi (especially helpful with the gfcf diet) Children with Starving Brains by Dr. Jaquelyn McCandless (step by step biomedical guide written by a DAN doctor) Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies by Bock (This one is not autism specific, but is one of my favorites. Dr. Bock is a well known DAN doctor and uses lots of patient stories/examples in the book. I found it to be easy to read and very helpful.) Also, our TACA meetings have a lending library (with all these books and lots more) for parents to check out and return to a future meeting. If you would like a copy of " local " DAN doctors email me and I will send you an attachment of doctors in GA and surrounding states. Also, for anyone interested in learing more about biomedical treatments and autism, the DAN (Defeat Autism Now) conference is going to be here in Atlanta in April. For more information go to, www.defeatautismnow.com . Hope this helps!
